Description I guess this is a dig at those people who start off drawing anime and never branch out into anything different. And those people who think you have to use special expensive paper and pencils/pens/ink/paints to do nice artwork. Also at the books of how to draw anime that you see everywhere nowadays, and certain someones whose skill with facial anatomy extends only to pointy noses.

Anime Bombalurina, coloured in my crappy version of photoshop. Originally sketched in crappy pencil, and then inked with equally crappy felt-tipped pen.

I draw anime but I do branch out to other things, I don't blame people who draw anime because it's their favorite, but ones who think it's the ONLY style bother me.

I try to do realism a lot, because I prefer it, but because of my manga/cartoon roots they always come up looking a bit funky....I do try though ;w; My icon is one of my more recent attempts (and failures) at realism...it's just....so....bad =w= but I do agree with you, a person should find their own style, not mimick what they see on the tv all the time (coming from the person who loves to draw the Joker everywhere buuuuut hey....he's fun to draw....)

It would appear that you don't like anime. Well, to each his own, I suppose. You do have a very valid point- anime isn't considered proper art (except for in Japan) and there must be reasoning behind that. However, I think artists like and are very skilled artists, despite the stylized anime that they draw. I suppose I'm not making very much sense because you just upset an ideal that I've had for four years. Thank you!

That aside, this is very pretty. The coloring is lovely, and this just proves your point that you don't need high quality tools to turn out a high quality piece of artwork. ^_^

It's not that I don't like anime - it's that I don't like how artists will spend their whole careers doing nothing but anime and never develop their own style, but just copy someone else's.

Anime can be beautiful. I just wish people would spend less time trying to perfect their anime style and more time developing their own.

I understand what your saying, and personally I prefer drawing anime but also enjoy photography and realistic sketches (although I'm not that good) but I know that I'll probably only be drawing anime style for a while because of what I want in a career so to label someone just because of what they want in life is wrong, and I highly doubt you could draw something like Honey-san's ( [link] ) work on a first attempt and unfortunately, everyone can draw anime is a misconception obviously. Before you say anything about a certain style (obviously everyone has their own) make sure you can actually come up with something that could be considered professional and not just a "quick sketch". In other words I have nothing against your opinion I'm just stating mine.

Have a good day.

Ok, I'm sick of explaining myself. You missed the point. Congratulations, anime-freak, way to look at the title and then completely ignore the whole "this is about people copying others' styles without coming up with their own" blurb.

Strikes me that you're just pissed because I hit the nail on the head where you're concerned. I don't see a different style. I see copied art.

And "I'm just staing my opinion" after an insult will never win you brownie points.

Heh, you know....I didn't insult you, but I guess the truth hurts now doesn't it?

And it doesn't bother me what you think because it's people like you that are around everyday to motivate me to get better. And to let you know, I was not at all pissed, I was just sayng what I felt towards the topic and it wasn't anything personal which you seem to have a hard time believing.

I have experienced far too many personal attacks to not regard someone telling me I need to produce professional artwork before my opinion is valid as something that is not an attack.

The point of this piece was dual - fancy materials and people copying without bothering to develop their own style. You completely skipped over that to tell me that not everyone can draw anime, that everyone has their own style, and that I should try to produce works that look professional before I comment on the quality of other people's work.

You missed the point, you claimed that my opinion is not valid because I am not a professional artist. Saying "this is just my opinion" at the end was just covering your ass - and if it is indeed just your opinion then perhaps it could have been worded better... Or you should have adhered to the saying "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all".

By your particular brand of logic - that one must be profesisonal in order to judge another's work - you yourself are guilty of judging someone without first being able to produce masterpieces of professional art. Hypocrisy gets my hackles up.

Since you obviously didn't read it, here it is again. The very first sentences.

I guess this is a dig at those people who start off drawing anime and never branch out into anything different. And those people who think you have to use special expensive paper and pencils/pens/ink/paints to do nice artwork.

I started off drawing anime, but I realised that I had to break away or I would never be accepted into any collage. The way I draw without any references is still anime looking, but I try to go as human as possible... and fail.... I guess I just need a couple more years under the knife of anatomy! HUZZAH TO THE BRILLIANCE OF BODIES! and yes. People who only draw anime anger me too. I got nothing against it, cause I cant draw it as well as people can out there, but I hate how anatomically inncorect it is. Its takes true talent to pull of pointy noeses and make it look pretty. Then again it takes even greater talent to draw a person IN FRICKEN REAL LIFE.... WITH CHARCOL....-pulls out hair-

If you wish to see an manga I consider brilliant, check out "Blade of the Immortal". Its beautiful. (The manga is a gazzillion times better than the anime series) [link]

Yeah, I started out like that. Cuz it was fun. then when I got really good(I think so anyway) It got really bored. And I thought, "Man, this is too easy. Way too easy." And it made drawing boring. And that was sad. And then some one told me that I would be a much better artist if I drew original style of my own. At first I thought she was rude, but then when I thought more about it, she was right. So I got my own style that I am proud of. ^_^
I love what you've done.

Thankyou! It feels like such a rare thing to have someone understand, straight away, what I'm talking about with this picture.

Your style looks like a fusion of things, which is actually great. I like the idea of taking bits and pieces from things you like and combining them.

I used to draw it, but bored quickly and worked for years to get my art away from that style, now I have my own unique style
and i couldn't be happier, i think the over exaggerated features in anime look ridiculous!

you don't seem to like anime...
i taught a few people to draw it was VERY difficult to get them to understand basic anatomy.

CatAstropheBoxes In reply to Nephsech [2008-12-01 11:23:39 +0000 UTC]

You're right, I don't like anime. I believe it to be an incredibly easy, boring style to copy. The internal styles may vary, but as a whole it lacks the kind of creativity that artists should strive for. So does the classical "comic book" style.

I believe both styles to be a fine medium for professionals in animation and in comic books, but think that an artist as an indidual should strive for their own style... Or at least the capability to draw several styles, not just the one.

KittyKillAll-Art [2008-11-27 16:01:17 +0000 UTC]

I like this...I really do...I've been drawing seriously for about six years...I started at the bottom of the very bottom...my art was like a 5 year olds when I started. I had absolutely no natural talent and I'm pretty happy about how far I've come...I still have such a long way to go. I'm better at drawing still life with charcoal but you'll probably never see any of that here sadly. And I need to work on coloring on an art program if I can ever afford one...

My style leans towards anime but I'm trying to develop my own style away from it...

Well it's a very nice picture. I really like the colors and her face...one part of it that gets me is her chest. It looks a bit awkward to me.

I was one of those people who started off as an anime freak.
Sadly, I still have sort of the form going, but i can alo draw comic-ish, and realistic.
I like her face and the colors of her hair and her eyes.
And i think her nose looks fine. >.>

Aw, you made me feel bad... I draw anime, and I am just a begining artist and now I feel bad because 'everyone can draw anime'

But I don't like to boast on my artwork... I always know I can have improvment.

But, I would just like to say, I draw with a Hello Kitty pencil most of the time. That's as special as I get!

It's a cute pencil... it has a the Hello Kitty attached at the top on a chain and she's sitting in a tangerine box! And it jiggled and makes noise when I draw and write! Wow... when I go off on a tangent I go WAAAAY off... sorry!

The only thing is that she could use a bit more black-ing on the underside of her nose to make her a bit more kitty-like. But cute. ^_^

CatAstropheBoxes In reply to Mystitat [2005-12-28 12:11:30 +0000 UTC]

Maybe, but I've seen a lot of "jellicle" or catgirl art that doesn't put black on the nose at all... plus I wasn't feeling too confident that I could do it properly and still have it look like "typical" anime.

I can understand you are angry at people who draw good work then hold themselfs as "better than everyone else" (hell I know a few who draw horriblely then tell better artist how to draw) and I see in your description you do point out it's mainly the ones who are caught in a rut and claim they are great artist.

But your title "anyone can draw anime" is kinda rude
I am mainly an anime style artist, I just like the higher level of detail that is put into drawing a cartoon (I can't stant the way some cartoons people love look like they were draw by kids who draw everything as fast as they can) and since my main medium is a simple pencil and what I can do with just a gray scale I have become very fond of the anime style, I do a little realism but whole pictures in gray look messy so I rarely do it unless using color pencils in which I only use if I am going to do ultra realism

but as an artist it is VERY hard to get that anime style
you say anyone can and it's true
with a few hours and pataice they can
but you get it naturaly and you are acting as if it's effortless
I try and try to get those eyes to look like yours or the lips in profile to come out Exactly right and I often don't succeed before I wear a hole in the paper with my eraser
do to what you did here would take me about 2 hours, quite a bit of lead and a good portain of my eraser and I would still have many flaws

and for the record I use a simple .05 mm mech pencil I got at a super market and whatever paper I can find that isn't to thick for the scanner and doesn't have lines on it

anyway just remeber that just because the jerks make a big deal out of their work doesn't mean all anime artists do
most of us try very hard at what we do and are almost always lumped in with everyone else when the anti anime people bash the rude ones (not saying you are anti anime)

Great work BTW

CatAstropheBoxes In reply to B-Mage [2005-12-28 12:21:51 +0000 UTC]

^_^ I respect anime artists. I think a lot of anime-style pictures are really neat (and I -really- respect people who colour things digitally!) but I hate it when people suggest that if you draw one style of art, you can't draw another.
Example-that-happened-to-me: Since I usually draw in a more americanised cartoon style I obviously can't draw anything different.

That's why I gave it that title. I guess it's a bit misleading. I should've called it "Anyone Can Draw Anime If They Practise". *blushes*

As for it coming naturally... Um... Did I mention that I've been drawing for six years nearly nonstop and went through a fairly interesting stage of drawing only anime characters? ^_^'

also I've got a pretty good eye for detail (wouldn't know it from my work though) which I guess would make me a better critique than an artist but I try and none of my stuff takes more than maybe 15 min including color

CatAstropheBoxes In reply to ClaireOfTheWind [2005-12-28 12:10:18 +0000 UTC]

That's all well and good to know, ClaireOfTheWind, but since it -was- fairly rushed I wont take offense. Rushed, by the by, means I did only the one sketch and couldn't be bothered making the stipling perfect. I appreciate your opinion though. It's nice to see a comment that has some critique in it occassionally.

I wasn't going to be nasty and say anything about your art (if that's why you put the second comment). I'm still not.
