Miranda’s funeral took place on a fine, warm and bright summer morning; a stark contrast to the young filly’s mood; the emotional storm clouds casting a shroud over her person, the shadows on her face reflecting the darkness she felt in her heart. At birth she’d been lost to her birth family and now, just shy of her third year, she’d lost her dear adoptive mother.
Miranda had known her time would come soon, being forty-nine when she’d agreed to dedicate the last few years of her life to caring for the infant filly, and living to fifty-two was a fine old age yet knowing such did nothing to ease the pain Annalise felt at the loss.
She stared at the grave, taking in all the flowers that were left or brown by family, friends and acquaintances, the sheer number only partially giving her comfort that she was not the only one missing her. Her mother held some respect within their community, enough that she had a very respectable gathering at her funeral. Still, as Annalise stood beside her adopted brother, she was the only one to shed a tear.
“Don’t sob so much, filly, it does nothing for your appearance.” Her brother, Richard, Dick as his family dubbed him, snapped at her in irritation. Annalise felt heavily uncomfortable in his presence, always had; Dick had neglected their mother in her old age, having no time for her nor Annalise and he certainly was no comfort during this painful time.
“My apologies, Brother -” she was cut off as his leg connected with her shoulder, knocking her slightly off balance at his harsh correction.
“We are not siblings, filly, I am not your brother.”
“We two shared a mother, Dick -”
“You are adopted, filly. We share no blood.”
Annalise looked up at him in shock, dread filling her chest making it difficult to speak. “Art thou disowning me, Brother?”
“Not at all, Annalise,” he said with emphasis, head held tall and sparing her nary a glance, “but my mother would’ve wanted you to stay in our family and I cannot protect you as a mere adopted brother. You will be required to marry soon and will be forced out of our family. Unless we find a way to keep you in the family.”
“Thou wouldst never genuinely expect me to marry mine own brother?! Thou wouldst not have such an act condoned!” Annalise exclaimed, making sure to keep her voice low even though in truth most had left the funeral long ago, leaving only she and a brother she had once considered estranged but now considered a threat.
“I am not your brother!” He snapped, dark eyes glaring down at her. “You will address me as Laird Richard or you will not address me at all. If you wish to honour my mother, who would want you to stay in the family, you will need to do the honourable thing and become joined with me when the time comes. There is no other way.” With that he moved away, head held tall and stride purposeful. Annalise was left standing in the glade alone, legs slightly trembling from the conversation she had just endured. She was not even three years old and yet here she stood, alone in the world with a brother intend on forcing her into marriage.
“Mother... why didst thou have to go...”
