I had to experiment with those gorgeous SAI brushes. They just steal the show! hehehe. I kind of got tired of screentone patterns and background doing all the work. So I tried my hand at creating this grungy, thorny, kind of scary background. I hope you all like it.
Well, I guess this explains things a little bit further. Things will become clearer as the characters go through their adventure here. I don't want to overload with flashbacks. Am I right? Okay, those vines, thickets, thorns are a mood thingy...nothing alien here except his mood. I did the shading with pen lineart...gee...THIS PAGE WAS FUN!!! Let me know what you think. (Uhm, Paul's confession is not fun...it's sad.)

It'll all link together. I wish I was really fast at drawing so readers wouldn't be kept in the dark. But these flashbacks and them being happy will be like a ping-pong ball...back and forth to see their growth.

I LOVE this page!!! Soon as I saw the thorns i thought of Jesus' crown of thorns... and the hood of seclusion, shame and despair. The one we all have worn at some point in life. Such emotion and feels on this page.
And even if he did cause her death...Im thinking she died during pregnancy...doesn't seem like his father had much love for his mother either... and that because paul is like her it just infuriates him even more... I wonder if...Paul isnt even his real son...that his mother was irresponsible in a different way...

Oh, Teksu I hear you! So many issues...so much blame! I'm sooo glad you like the pattern in his clothes. It's from SAI...you just fill in the areas with gray then select the paper layer texture to "LACE" and just adjust the scale and darkness of it.
I loved doing that background...it felt like I was naturally painting, drawing and seeing the flow of the brushes. Thanks soooo much for your compliment on it.

Hmm, so Paul was somehow related to her death...interesting. Β Since on the previous page his father mentions that he's like his mother, insane, I wonder if that's a literal hint at erratic behavior (always a fun plot device, though I'm not banking on it because of the way Nelly discusses his personality on previous pages) or just talk from a grieving or just plain mean-spirited fellow.
