The deep of field was "managed" in the camera, I only use photoshop for a verly little skin retouch and mainly for adjust the contrast and saturation, but you must get almost all the photo from the camera in the moment you take it.
In this case I got this deep of field using a little F number, usually I use a lens that let me set f/2.8 in all the focal lengths (from 24mm to 70mm), is very versatile. You can try a "fixed lens" too, like the 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4 the f number is best but you can't zoom because are fixed lens, anyway in a location you can walk near or far for get a good framing.

Ooooh cool, well at the moment I have the standard canon kit 18-55mm 3.5/5.6 but I'm buying a 28-70mm 2.8 Sigma and probably a 50 and 85mm 1.8 from Canon

Only thing other than my kit lens I have access to is a 70-200mm 2.8 which is waaay to much zoom and creep :3

Thanks for the tip though man ! :3 I will go to another convention in a couple of months and get some awesomeness :3

The Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 is a great option for cosplay events where ther are a lot of people, the zoom is very helpful there, the 50 and 85mm 1.8 are excelent lenses too, in fact these are my favorites for location I recomended for you, the 70-200 f/2.8 is a very expensive lens U_U and this is more for indoor sports (I think) but it can be useful for the scenary cosplay contest
I hope you can get some of this optics, because the 18-55 is a very basic lens ^_^!!
