When I go to color a pic, I generally use the magic wand selection tool to select ALL of the background first. (not where you mean to color it, mind you.) then I use the inverse selection tool, and with a new layer, I use the bucket fill tool to lay the base color (generally the color for skin or main fur). I then make layers above it, putting the flat colors of everything else using a solid brush tool. after every seperate color is on a different layer, I lock them and create masking layers (grouped layers) to do shading with a softer brush tool. That's pretty much it. XD

Well first I convert the picture into very clear lines with Ilustrator using live trace. I do a custom trace for each picture playing with the settings until I'm happy.
then I put it into Phtoshop and check for any cracks between the objects and the background. If there are any openings I fix them with pencil. Then I duplicate the image.
There's no white right now, because of what I did in Illustrator. So on the bottom layer I select a blank patch and then select similar. After this I deselect the background then I fill the objects with white.
I always colour the clothing first. giving each artical of clothing a different group The fur comes next then any objects in the picture. The background is last. Then I flatten the whole picture and save it as a PNG and a JPEG.

hm, sounds interesting. I'm the cartoonist for my school's newspaper, and my editor suggested I learn how to smooth lines with illustrator. I'm completely helpless in that program. DX

Just load it onto Illustrator and play around with the tracing options

I'll try it out once I get my school-issued laptop back. *sigh* We have to return the laptops over the summer, so I lose all my CS4 stuff. XD

I must say that is a very impressive drawing. I know I criticsize this a lot but I like the fur. and the body shaping. Very nice.
