Meet Chernabog, my 12 ft tall replica of the demon from Disney’s ‘Fantasia’. He’s a prop I made in 2016 for my high school marching band’s wizard themed show that featured the song, “Night on Bald Mountain”. His design was inspired by a float from the parade, Spectromagic, that used to run every night in the Magic Kingdom at Disney World in Orlando. The float was meant to resemble a volcano, but it could open up to reveal that it was actually Chernabog covering himself with his wings.
For most of the show, my prop was merely a mountain in the back, but when his song played, his eyes lit up, wings opened, and he could be pushed forwards as though he were chasing the band. His structure is made from PVC pipes while his body, arms, and face are sculpted from wrapping paper held together with masking tape.
