I really love how you explained every little bit step by step. It's clear to understand and I'm totally going to use the first method since I struggle a lot with cell shading in general and shading digital. Thank you so much I feel it's going to help me a lot ^^

Cel Shading looks like such a simple technique yet in practice (Especially when you dont know what your doing) can be challenging....This tutorial helped me alot tho. Thank you.

I wanna use cel shading to do simple rendering of some portrait photos. The point is how to determine and place the boundaries of the color shades, because in the photo, it appears to be a smooth gradation of color. Anyone knows?, pls tell me.

So, wait; what's the difference between normal shading and Cel shading?Β
And what exactly is 'normal' shading?
Is Cel shading basically adding cute light reflections or something?

Why did I put all of my questions here? Is that more convenient? Why am I still typing?

;~; I'm so.. me.. e.e

You might have figured this out already, but the difference between normal shading and cel shading is:

Normal shading: Used to show lighting conditions and define the form of what's being drawn through varying levels of dark values. This forms what's called a "gradient" from dark to light. This tutorial about shading black and white traditional art covers the basics . In color shading, the shading comes from combining colors and blending them together to get the gradient. Normal shading tends to give art a "3D" realistic effect.
Cel shading: Used to show lighting conditions and define the form of what's being drawn through strong shadows without a gradient. As such, there's less colors used to shade. "Normal" shading is to "realism" as "cel shading" is to anime and cartoons, but good cel shading AND regular shading pay attention to light sources~

what art program do you use? Sorry if this is an overly asked question but i have an apple computer and dont know what programs for art to get

caydett In reply to LiliesaremyLovers [2015-12-22 03:54:16 +0000 UTC]

I use photoshop cc to draw it's pretty much the only program you need imo
however if you're looking to try a free program to see how you like digital art then GIMP has a mac version. It's not quite as versatile as photoshop, but people create some lovely things with it

Thank you very much for putting up this tutorial. I've just always loved the cell shaded appearance whenever i see it.

Actually now that i think about it: Is cell shading one of those art styles that takes much longer then others to complete a picture, because you have to be very careful with what you're doing?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

caydett In reply to p101 [2014-07-10 01:04:29 +0000 UTC]

Glad you like it ^^

As for the style, well I guess it depends on the artist... personally when I was first figuring out how things worked it took a lot longer. Now that i'm more used to the technique, it's actually two to three times faster than soft shading because I don't have to worry about blending or anything and the colours are easier to change.

So I guess it depends how used to the technique you are? You don't have to be too careful about placement (and like any technique you'll get faster at it the more you use it).

SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME WHAT CEL SHADING IS. Some people says it's to make 3d objects look like 2d objects, I thought it was 3-D Shading (the shading of mass (like a sphere with a light bulb above it)). PLEASE SOMEBODY EXPLAIN IT TO ME.

WaterColourSienna In reply to Zunachina [2013-11-14 14:36:03 +0000 UTC]

cel shading is basically shading with hard lines (no blending involved), but some people change it to blend!!!!!!!!

I was wondering how you shade the skin/hair/clothes. Do you need to use tablet for this?

EchizensGirl In reply to LimPong [2014-12-01 04:24:45 +0000 UTC]

The tutorials in the description show how she shades skin/hair/clothes.
You do not need a tablet, it just helps to have something that has pressure sensitivity to it
