Hey Sol, funny you should contact me, I was going to ask if you could possibly critique my latest coloring as your feedback was extremely useful last time.
As far as inking goes I use manga studio 5 with my intuos 5. I don't have any video footage of my process I'm afraid.
On my first inks (Batman) I used the photoshop pen tool mostly but it left me with a very sterile looking ink job, like the lines had been drawn by a computer, which in effect they had. And the cross hatching left a strange optical effect because the lines were identical. Not to mention that it took forever using that method.
For my second inks (this hulk one here) I used manga studio 5 and I have never looked back. With the pen stabilisation option you can keep a smooth line without too much difficulty when drawing slowly, this setting should be used on a very low setting otherwise it tries to correct too much.
On manga studio there is a line correction setting which is terrible in my opinion as it tries to re-draw the line, but the stabilisation setting helps to remove the line wobble that come when you draw a line slowly. I found the brushes in manga studio work better for smooth thick to thin strokes also.
The main different is time really, in manga studio I can draw a good line in one or two attempts. In photoshop I can draw a line 10 times and still not be happy with it and end up using the pen tool for the long curves and hatching.
It can look a little "digital" with Manga studio but it feels more natural to ink with it to me and there are some great brushes out there for MS if you want a more authentic ink on paper look.
Some inkers prefer to feather their lines to thicken them but I didn't really take to that method so I try to draw my lines in one stroke using pen pressure to control thickness.
Other than that I would give the same advice that you would give for pencil drawing, draw long sweeping lines fast to keep them smooth. Use your whole arm and not just your wrist. Cross hatching comes with hours of practise, it took me ages to be able to draw uniform lines next to each other in quick succession and I still struggle sometimes.
I would guess you know the general stuff like thinker outlines on characters. Thin to thick to thin lines are more interesting to look at. Using line weight to convey depth and/or shadow. Keeping everything close nice and thick and everything in the background thin.
The last piece of advice I would offer is to have two layers, one a draft inks and one final. When drawing lines that intersect draw them on separate layers so you can draw you line past the join and use the eraser to tidy up the end without effecting the line below it, then merge down. This gives you a nice clean join and allows you to the finish lines with a nice thick end in one smooth stroke.
There is a great way to do this in Manga Studio that allows me to draft in red ink, get the lines I like, tidy the end up and then merge down in black to the layer below in a few shortcut clicks. If you do end up using manga studio let me know and I will explain the method in detail.
Hope that helps mate!

Haha. Manga Studio - yes. On my list of things to get. I have used Paint Tool Sai and Krita, both of which are good and similar to MS-5, I hear. Every use them? Krita is free on the web.
There is a line stabilizer plug-in for PS called Lazy Nezumi. A friend and I have managed to acquire it and I'm waiting to install it. Will let you know how it works. From demos I've seen, it bridges the gap between PS and programs like Manga Studio, Sai, etc., for making good ink lines. As memory serves, it's about 35 dollars (US)
The other thing about PS is that the brushes rot for inking. They're designed for photo touch up and can be used for painting, but are not suitable for inking. So, the trick there is to make your own, or get some from digital inkers who make their own. The are easy to make, in general. The file is easy to make, that is. Designing the a brush that works well is tricky. I'm still working on it.
It's also a good idea to turbo charge PS by disabling Windows INK via the Wacom Desktop Center - Pen Calibration controls. The procedure requires adding a file to the PS settings in the registry that redirects PS from Windows INK to WinTab. This preserves pen pressure and other properties. (If you just turn off Windows INK without adding the file, you'll lose pen pressure and other properties.) Anyway, by disabling INK, you'll be able to work with large files without stalling, freezing, etc, and keep your strokes in real time (i.e. no lag).
Yeah. Pen tool and vector stuff is tedious. I'm going against the grain to learn it. It will come in handy, some day. But what I really like is the brush inking, even if it has to be with a digital brush. And like you, I like to lay in the line thin-to-thick or vice-versa with a single pressure stroke, rather than manicuring it with a bunch of build-up, or outline and fill.
Thanks for the review. It's good to know I can blame at least some of it on PS. LOL.

Firstly, I have no excuse for the ridiculous length of time it has taken for me to reply to this... my apologies.
i have found MS5 to be the best for inking, at least for me but lately I have been coloring with it and again the brushes are awesome right out the box. The whole program feels much more suited to this type of art and much more intuitive than photoshop for this type of art.
i know photoshop much better because I have used it for so long but I can see me moving more and more towards manga studio for everything. One thing I would say for photoshop is that it makes you learn to keep a steady hand!

Yeow! That is some long turn-a-round time.
I got MS5 a little while ago (called Clip Studio Paint) and transitioned to it. Don't use PS anymore.
