Oh my gosh, you drew them from the opening sequences of Camp Scare and Abracadabra Doo. Me like.

I love how they exaggerated all of their qualities...i.e., Fred's hair, Daphne's curves, Velma's, er, vertical challenge, Shaggy's height and skinniness, and of course, Scooby is already plenty exaggerated You did such a great job here.

Thank you! I love exaggerating their qualities, but most of the time it doesn't work out so well xD

This is the first time I've sen the "new" artwork style up close. It appears that they are trying to meld the old, 1969 style (no pupils, minimalist style) with the newer, edgier look that si the norm these days.

yeah, i think the film, 'abracadabra doo', was released quite recently, they look like this for a few minutes during the intro, then it cuts back to the other style

You seem to have an affinity for the NEW SD art style.

I haven't seen the new one yet. Heard some negative things about it though.

do you mean that shaggy and scooby doo get a clue?
if so then i have to say it isnt very good at all, i prefer the whole gang, not just shaggy and scooby

Yes, that is what I meant...On one level I sort of like the new look to the characters...something different after 40 years of the original, but at the same time they are clearly trying to give it more of a anime quality that seems to be so popular right now.
Ya can't win.

yeah i do really like the style, but its a rether dramatic change all at once, but still a good style none the less
if anything it seems to be the storylines that are going downhill, but then again after 40 years what else can you expect

It's kind of hard to believe a bunch of mystery solving teens driving all over the world and solving more or less the same mystery everywhere they visit. In all my travels I have yet to encounter ONE mystery that needed solving.

Yeah, the animatin of the 70s was pretty bad. I have to give the japanese a lot of credit for being able to do decent work on a TV budget. Even if there is not a lot of movement, at least they designed the characters and backgrounds well. HB got to the point where they were just cranking out bad work because there had virtually no competition.

heh i guess so, HB have some pretty random catoons xD

MJBivouac In reply to ccootttt [2010-03-25 16:25:57 +0000 UTC]

Sadly, they became just a cartoon factory, churning out mediocre stuff for Saturday Morning. I still like their stuff..some of it anyway, because I grew up with it.

ccootttt In reply to MJBivouac [2010-03-25 16:36:22 +0000 UTC]

yup, they became known fo good catoons in ealry years, then all that changed when people discovered other styles such as anime, honestly i am happy for the change, as i do really like the style, but some cartoons will always be seen the same, especially ones that have been around for as long as scooby doo

HB really did invent TV animation, and made it possible to do an animated series on a TV budget, but a loyt of what that meant was to simplify characters, and simplify the animation. So their early stuff like Yogi Bear and Huckleberry Hound, had a sort of cool stylized look to them, that we NOW call RETRO. But in the late 60 s and early 70s not a lot of new blood went into animation. The same people were still doing all the work for years and years. Unless you could get into Disney where they still did quality work, everyone else was sort of stuck with HB, Filmation and Depatie-Freleng. The 70s really was a bad time for American animation. It almost died all together. The Japanese were embracing animation, but not a lot of that stuff was seeping into the states yet. Of course today there is virtually no real traditional animation being done. It's all digital done to LOOK traditional.

yeah i get what you mean, HB's things like yogi bear did lookcool, and yes i always though of it as retro, and the digital makes it much easier to make the cartoons to a higher standard, i cant speak from much experience in the ways cartoons have changed though, considering i am quite young i can't help but compare to the newer methods of animation, and of course it does look much better

MJBivouac In reply to ccootttt [2010-03-25 22:16:18 +0000 UTC]

But like all digital art...there is no 'original' artwork anymore. I own a several ORIGINAL animation cells, and they are damned cool! But they don't make them anymore. BUT! it is cool that for a few hundred bucks you can by a digital animation program and make your own animated stuff for practically FREE! More people can try theri hand at it these days.

which most likely means more, rather random cartoons

Not sure what you mean by 'random', but certainly more and different stories can be told by more people.

hm, i guess so, it seems that copies of certain things seem to do a bit worse but in some cases it can end up the show everyone remembers, honestly, i think that scooby doo was kind of inspired by the famous 5 books, but now the famous 5 has its own show, and it didnt di very well at all
