I remember I first read this book
Back when I was only nine
It traumatized me temporarily
I lost the book awhile ago
But to this day some of the events
Haunt my thoughts and dreams

Yes, a very thought-provoking and disturbing series. It's baffling what a history of abuse can do to a person. Thanks for the comment!

Our teacher made us read it. Most of the kids cried and the rest had vomited (or dry heaved) at least once.
It is sickening that the human mind could do such things to a child. I wish his mother died from more than
just a heart attack. T-T

It's definitely beyond the pale. I like to think that these people have to face the enormity of their actions someday. For them, nothing can be worse than looking into a mirror.

Ooh, and as well, when the BABY BROTHER said 'Dave's going to die, the Boy's going to die' it totally creeped me out.

Well, Russel was brain-freaking-washed. It wasn't his fault, David recalls.

That mother's mind was demented. But what she did was unforgivable.

This book makes me cry at the end⦠and hate his parents. (mostly his mother)
Excellent alternate cover. I like this one better than the real cover.

Thank you! This was a really rushed piece, since it wasn't for anything artistic... but in a way, I like it like that.

I found it, not knowing what to expect....the level of abuse he underwent is horrifying, for lack of a better word.
His further memiors are really interesting, too. It messed him up for a long, long time.

I haven't read past this book. I hear his brother wrote something about it, too? Not sure. I'm not surprised it messed him up for a while-- and that whole family as well, I'm sure. What's really sad to me is how little the father did. He just ran away and did nothing for his kids.
Thanks for looking!

It made me cry when the father left. Dave's last hope- gone. My library only has this book- not the other two. And imagine how horrible it was- he still remembers it! That mother of his was, to me, an idiot. Who starves, stabs and makes their child put his hand over a lit stove?! He was right to call her the B word.

Well, it's part of a series of memoirs. The next book is about him being in foster care(and his mother still antagonizing him and vowing to have him back), and I think the third book is about him confronting his father (he's dying of cancer) and trying to figure out what made his mother the way she was (he didn't find out, but he figures that she was abused too)
Yes, his brother wrote a book because when David left, his mother moved on to another child. It's confirmed most of what David said happened.
The youngest brother and the grandmother have made public statements saying he made it up, but the Principal that got him away from the mother wrote back saying it was true, so they're lying to themselves or ashamed of it or...something, I don't know.
No problem!

Craaazy. It's really a shame that there were people that knew him that are trying to deny it and call him a liar. Why would anyone lie about something like that... and so completely. So ridiculous.

Same. It's so hard to read, knowing it all actually happened to someone-- much less a child.

and the hrdest thing to believe is that it's all true, every single word. none of it was ficion, it all really happened to him. i dont know how many times i cried reading tht damn book. i had to put it down several times cui cudnt see thru my tears.
....yknow, i wish david himself could read all these comments. im sure hed be tuched that so many ppl care about him when so long ago it seemed nobody did...

I had the same reaction upon reading it, the first time. The second time, when I was older, and more world-wise, it just filled me with abject terror. How could someone do this to their child? How? Those are the questions that keep us up at night.
I'm sure he's received thousands of letters of support over the years. The fact that he now has a family of his own and has broken the chain of abuse is an achievement. He's clearly a strong person. I don't know if I could have survived and, indeed, prospered, within all of that.

It's common to single out a single child as a scapegoat...when David left, she moved on to another child, and he wrote a book, too.
