Description The history of the world, my love --
(Save a lot of graves, Do a lot of relatives favors!)
Is those below serving those up above!

from Stephen Sondheim's "A Little Priest", from the original score. My first Sondheim musical and still my favorite.

This is a (proud!) entry to the Sweeney Todd poster contest.

The razor, pie, blood, glass pattern and textures are all original, created by me in Photoshop. I have the full 20x30 resolution available, should this design be selected.

As always, all comments and favorites will be returned in kind. If you like it, please comment or +fav it! This contest is already awash with entries, and it's the only way for it to stand out from the crowd. I look forward to your feedback!

Very good. I like this one although I thought that the pie was a drain until I read the description. XD. But I really like this one although I did like the original poster better but I understand why you removed it from the contest. originality is key when in a contest.

A drain? Oops... that didn't even occur to me. My mistake for modeling it after a cherry pie instead of a traditional mince pie...I wanted to have more red showing, but I didn't expect that particular confusion

Your entry really stands out from the rest. I think I only saw one or two others that could make this contest difficult for you. All in all it's an amazing image. Often the hardest thing to do is not get sucked into the group mind that contest like these create. You did a good job of standing out.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, and I'm glad you think it stands out...and you are right, there are a lot of entries that are exactly the same, while at the same time there are a few of them that have me saying "WHOA". Thanks for the comment!

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment on my submission (I have to admit that the way I did my titles was strongly influenced by your arrangement; I hope that doesn't bother you, and I will find a way to change it if it does.)

I thought I might say that Johnny's name gets a little bit lost in the blood on the edge of the razor, at least if you're just glancing at it.

Major kudos to you and your originality *smile*

Doesn't bother me at all. Hell, consider this retroactive permission , besides, the fonts that each of us chose fit our interpretations quite well...and I still love your submission.

Thanks for the observation about the razor - I struggled with where to put his name, and in the end there was no strong spot for it...perhaps it shouldn't be on there at all? I'm still not sure.

Thank you for the comment and the fav - best of luck!

I think its good to have the name on the razor; its very striking, and oddly fitting with the kind of symbiosis that Sweeney has with his razors in the story. I think it just needs to be eased out of the blood, because the narrow black letters kind of fade in the red. The part on the blade looks great, almost like an engraving.

Good luck mate!

I was looking through all of the thumbs, and this really caught my eye! I absolutely love it! It's different from everything else, and it's a nice suprise to see a poster that doesn't focus on Johnny. :3 Good luck in the contest!

I would have to say that this is most definitely my favorite of the three. It's a bit more interesting to look at than the other two because of the glass shards and excellent texturing. I'm very impressed with your original additions to the piece as well. It feels like you spent a good amount of time on this. I must also say I like that you didn't just take the easy road out and use pictures of J.D. Although he is beautiful to look at, your creations are beautiful too and in looking at the rest of the submissions, this fact make yours more unique than the rest in my oh-so-humble opinion. Best of luck my friend!

ceasetobeme In reply to vinylspin [2007-12-05 01:55:32 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I'm really glad you like it. It's my favorite of them too - the others were accused of being too derivative, and in retrospect I agree. With this one I wanted to represent the cause, means, and product of Sweeney's "psychosis" - his life shattered, hit greatest skill used to revenge his love...the victims of his vengeance baked into the meat-pie. Plus I wanted to show off a little

I definitely spent time on this, and I deliberately didn't use the lovelyandtalented Mr. Depp - if it were an original character, being defined by him first, I would have featured him...but Sweeney Todd is an established (and amazing) character who has been played by the great and small - it's the story that has remained constant and continued to captivate.

I'm glad you took such an artistic approach to something as seemingly simple as a movie poster. Hearing why you chose to or not use various images gives this real creative substance. I like it even more now.

Agreed - and someone messaged me about how just having a straight razor wasn't particularly original (it's been done, I guess), and I though that I should create something more genuinely reflecting the musical, and voila. Thanks a lot for the comment!
