This is taken with the Canon 100 mm macro lens, Cecily? Very good piece of glass.

Great Stuff

Very, very nice!!!

This is very similar to a waterdrop image I'd believe I mentioned to you, though the subject's positions are slightly different.

With waterdrops, the magnifier effect is VERY dependent on the focal distances.
Notice the magnified scene inside drops (L to R):
Drops #1 & #4 themselves are slightly blurred, but view through them are sharp.
#4 (far right) offers the sharpest magnified view.
#1 is about 1mm farther back than #4 resulting in a slightly blurrier view.
The 2 drops in the middle are on the leaf's tip & probably 4-5mm closer to the lens than #1. That means the drops themselves will be well defined, but there won't be any focus to the magnified view.

You would have had a nearly identical view through all the drops if they were on the edge of the leaf
or a similar perspective that keeps all the drops at the same distance from you.

I find these kind of images very cool.
Keep it up!

WOW, your analysis is far more interesting than the picture, Jim. How did you even calculate the minute distance of 1mm or 4-5mm? (Am I hopeless? ) But, I'm very happy to have your approval!

If the drops are all within a 1mm span, the magnified images will be in good focus.
You can see what I mean in Duggiehoo's "Rained all day" [link]

I wonder though whether the size of the drops plays a significant role in the focal magnification. My drops were very small on the edge of a tiny leaf, while Doug's drops appear to be large drops along a stem. Because my drops were so small, the different span between them became more pronounced in contrast to Doug's large drops.

Yes, the size of the drop does have a significant impact on the "zoom".
According to the principal of behind it, the magnification of the optics is dependent on the size and shape of "lens".
However, to get the effect we're discussing, it's the middle of drops that must be at the proper distances to each other.

So yes, the smaller drops makes the separation between more apparent.

It's time for you to get back to some macro work, Jim! I want to see your water drops demonstration!
(I'd better do some reading on optics, if I can get out of my laziness! )

Thanks,
and hopeless? NO, not at all!!!

LOL! Those are approximations, but after quite literally hundreds of macro shots, I have a pretty good grasp on how shallow the DOF can be.
