Description "A-America...please...I swear, I've never done witchcraft...please, please...! They're all lying! Believe me! PLEASE BELIEVE ME!"

"All the evidence is against you...witch."

During the 17th century, New England held huge witch hunts, the most famous of these being the Salem witch trials. From Febuary 1692 to May 1693, a mass hysteria grabbed hold of several counties and towns in Massachusetts, and over 100 people were tried for being "witches". Now, while witchcraft does exist, the people had a very primitive definition of a witch, and a lot of the people accused were innocent. Sadly, most of the people said to be witches were only said to be by the people who disliked them, and with no one to defend them, they were hanged.

I took a little artistic liberty here--according to Wiki, no witches were burned, only hanged (although apparently one was crushed to death)...but I've been watching "Hunchback of Notre Dame" nonstop and I didn't think showing America hanging a girl would be easy to do visually...so she's on a stake. That, and it's the traditional way to deal with a witch. Bear with me here.

Anyway, this is for 's contest "Dark Culture".

That's the thing about burning at the stake.Β  It doesn't kill until it first hurts.Β  A lot!Β  And she will feel the pain crawling up her legs to some very sensitive areas of her body.Β

Β

He knows this, and he digs it!Β  In this picture, he looks like he is describingΒ what her torment, and his pleasureΒ watching it, will be!Β

Who cares about historical accuracy - burning a witch is much more dramatic than just hang her ... allows also to show much more emotions - the fear, the pain, the suffering, the flames, the hope that a knight in shining armor comes to the rescue.

Lower the torch! Thrust it into the pyre! Burn the Witch! Burn her!

Yeah, I thought it should be a bit long--not too fancy, not too straggly, but long.

Wow, thanks. I was hoping to convey that; I'm glad it worked. 8D

They did WORSE. Flat area, 'witch' under board of wood, drop heavy rocks until they confess or get crushed to death...

IT'S MAD SCARY, I KNOW.

I saw this in my inbox, and after reading the title and realizing that it was America and the Salem With Trials, I had to subdue the urge to throw someone out of the window.

But then I read your artist's description, and I calmed down.

Because one of the many, many things that piss me off is "BURN TEH WITCH!!!1one" being used in regards to the Salem Witch Trials.

O__o
Are there such creatures?
Other then this thing, of course...xD
No, but that is, again, the traditional way to kill a witch--dunno what made 'em choose hanging instead.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RikusShadow In reply to ceilingotaku [2011-03-14 01:00:32 +0000 UTC]

Hanging was chosen over burning because by then, it was falling out of favor. While there were burnings after the Salem Witch Trials, it was soon beinig replaced by hanging. It's just like how in recent years, the leathal injection has replaced the electric chair in most states.
