FRESHNESS

- After Test

Morning had only just washed over the Dunkle Schicksal packs hideout. The sun’s orange hues cascaded down the abandoned buildings like a bright waterfall. Reflecting on any window that still held its glass. It was a sight that was both familiar and unfamiliar to the purebred. Living her whole life in the city, never staying anywhere so engrossed in nature, everything about this place was new. However, it was the buildings that often brought her comfort. Acting almost like a familiar face in the crowd of strangers. Yet, there was a thought niggling at the back of her mind. This place, these dogs, they weren’t supposed to seem like strangers. At least, that’s what the merle assumed with packs. Perhaps her views on pack life were outdated? Much like the interior of the buildings.

When the orange hues of early morning faded into a pastel purple that would soon merge into the blue hues of the sky, the purebred decided that it was probably time for her to do something. Being an Omega sounded like a lot of grunt work, and she didn’t like it. Her umber gaze sheepishly turned to the ominous forest behind her, the one she hadn’t dared set foot in since the whole test ordeal. The thought of being hunted again, preventing her.

Swiftly, the merle made her way to the edge of the forest. The thicket, overgrown. The trees, looming. The light, faded. Slowly, a shaky paw rose before quickly striking the ground just beyond the thicket. Slowly, the merle pried her eyes open. She had no idea what she was expecting, but it didn’t happen. A blush crept upon her cheeks as the purebred glanced around the hide-out. Hoping no-one saw what she was certain would be an odd display. Umber eyes met with no-one. Each dog seemed too busy going about their own business to notice the acts of an Omega - perhaps it wasn’t so bad after all.

With a renewed confidence, she made her way into the depths of the forest. Admiring the way the colour seemed to be drained from everything and replaced with a variety of blue hues. Yes, this would be a good place to blend in and get out of those nasty chores. It’s not like she didn’t enjoy doing things for others, as she did. It’s just that she wanted to settle into the pack before breaking her back to do things for them. Though, it does sound selfish when put like that..

The purebred didn’t have much time to dwell on it before the ground gave way beneath her, sending her tail flying over her head before she landed with a thud on her back. Shock widened her eyes as she quickly righted herself, fussing over her coat removing leaves and twigs before her burnt umber gaze turned to stare accusingly at the risen tree root above the slope she fell down. With her eyes narrowed upon the culprit she silently vowed to return and dig it up later.

‘Hey… are you okay?’

The soft, friendly voice seemed to come from beyond. The merle spun around only to notice another dog. A very muscular, very broad, and very handsome liver merle Bully-type. Almost instantly, her maw broke out into a charismatic grin.

“Yeah, I’m fine… thank you.”

There was no point denying what he had seen with his own eyes, just as there was no point in being embarrassed about it. After all, the Poodle always believed embarrassment to be a waste of time. “I just didn’t see that root there, and there’s no broken bones so we should be good… all fine…” Oh, great, now she was rambling. Quick, change the topic - “What brings you out here?”

An amused grin curved the strangers maw, their head tilting slightly as they allowed the amusement to reach their eyes in a genuine display. The blue merle wasn’t unused to seeing honest displays but was still taken aback by it.

‘I-’ His sentence was broken off by a huffed laugh, almost as if they were the one embarrassed. Zodiac was half tempted to state that she was the one that just took a tumble, he had nothing to be embarrassed about… almost. ‘I was looking for you.’ Sheepishly the stranger diverted their gaze as realisation settled over the Poodle. She wasn’t getting out of work today - was she?

“Oh?” It was all she could muster. It didn’t even sound overly friendly. More suspicious, if anything.

The stranger shifted uncomfortably under her scrutiny, his light chain collar jingling cheerfully at the movement. ‘Well, it’s just that I know the test can be rough on some dogs and I just wanted to make sure you’re doing okay, settling in well and all that?’ There was a moment of silence as his mismatched eyes locked onto hers. She could feel the genuine kindness radiating from the Bully-mix. ‘Are you?’ His gaze broke from hers, darting to the grass as she struggled to find words for him.

“... I am, thank you.” Her fluffy head tilted as she offered the male a smile, mimicking his from moments before. Their gazes met again and he offered her a shy smile in return. How cute. “Did you want to show me around? - I don’t believe I have received an official tour just yet.” The Poodle added a touch of extra energy in her tone, hoping to spend a little more time with the curious merle.

‘We can’t have that… I’m Dexter, by the way.’

“Zodiac.”
