Description some of you have been asking ...WTF is HDR?

... well here is an example of an image redone in High Dynamic Range processing.. here is the original (now in my scraps) : [link]

Notice in particular the brown wooden wall above the door ..the way the tones of every little detail pop out in better contrast. Using HDR techniques in the post edit has enormous impact on detail.. especially in urbex photography where texture and detail are highly desirable..

... an incredible increase in contrast ... look at the broken glass through the doorway ... it looks like the impression of someone once standing there looking in! ... and the texture is magnificent.

not that your photography lacks any of these qualities without digital enhancement ... but yes, i'd agree it adds incredible depth to both colour & texture ... very very cool!

I thought..repost? But then I looked.. It makes the photo a whole lot darker, and adds a slight red hue, doesn't it? I'm not sure if I like one or the other best... they're different, but both are great.

Cool - nice to have the A-B comparison link! Thanks! It sort of reminds me of the analog vs digital debate in music recording

yes.. its a tone-balancing process using the best tones from 2 or more of the exact same image shot at different f-stops..

It's an interesting process. It definitely has some advantages but I'm still not convinced about the results. That said, this is bloody great.

If I ever get any time to play I'll have to give HDR a try. Very interesting technique.

CellarDweller In reply to horai [2006-05-18 19:32:55 +0000 UTC]

well the results can vary to the extreme depending on how you tone-map the HDR image.. I just 'aquired' a copy of Photomatix Pro 2.2.2 ... amazing little proggy!
