I'm glad somebody else agrees about the helicarrier.

Yeeeeah. "Discreet."
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

How is having a helicarrier wasting taxpayer money!

well it is awesome, but also the single least effective way of moving troops over due to it not respecting the laws of physic, using astonishing amounts of energy, being a huge and very visible target, surprisingly easy to take down and horribly expensive and wasteful.
Plus, to be able to use it as an airplane carrier with people on top of it, it would have to be rather slow, so there's not even that going for it.
In short, it's like flying tanks. A gleefully awesome childish concept that is completely irrational. My lego crations as a child were more sensible than that.

They actually tried to make real ones. Kindof. GIANT BLIMPS WITH PLANES ATTACHED TO THEM FTW
Mind you, giant blimps are much more sensible.

Yep, mostly something the US did. Kinda a stopgap measure to try and come up with something that was a carrier without having to build a carrier from the ground up. Worked pretty well for the most part, until it hit storms and a few other minor mishaps.
Also a few major ones that tended to result in the deaths of people, the lost of the craft, or both.
Fun side note to those blimps, they built many buildings which had been designed to offer those blimps a support network to ensure they remained in the air at all times. Cost a fair bit to build them as well. Then when the program was killed after too big an accident (aka, they lost the second one), they had been forced to shut up shop with most of the gear, since there was no need for buildings of that size and scope without the blimps. Even during WW2, they barely got used for more then some support work, and nothing like the crown jewel designs that they had been built for. That is, until NASA came about and was given a massive budget to ensure mankind was able to make a small step on the moon. Suddenly those mothballed buildings became VERY useful for NASA, as they allowed them to close off a VERY large area of space so as to carry out some important tests they might not have otherwise.

No, but they did run into issues often enough. Worse was when they tried to tie one of the ships off, a gust of wind came up and blew the ship high into the sky (so it bow was pointing right down to the ground). The problem was that at the time a group of men had been trying to pull the ship in, so when the gust hit, it pull them up with the ship. Most of them lost their grip before it was a problem, 5 would be lifted into the air. Two of those guys dropped within a few meters of the ground. Two of them held on for a while, but lost their grip, and then lost their lives. The last guy held on for dear life for hours until someone could actually save him.

Wait, is that Mr. Smith or Smithy?
Seems like Mr. Smith, since Smithy would find all of this extremely strange.

Did the helicarrier pick up the TARDIS while the Doctor was still inside it too, or was that a one time occurrence?

Who knows? Now that Martha Jones is with UNIT, one would think that they could just call him up at any time now.

Yeah, but that one time was funny. I joked and said they didn't even TRY to hide the string that held the TARDIS up in the air. (Day of the Doctor)
