It turned out I was right and these two really were dumb, lazy and ungrateful sods. We took them in because they were family of the roommate, since then they left and we were all really happy about it-including the roommate.My situation changed a lot too in the meantime, I can now look back and say: tja.

Taking someone into your home is always a bit uncertain, even if you know them. Sharing living space is an entirely different level than even sharing a hotel room.

to be fair I've had some great experiences in the past like this. That wasn't one of them.

Oh yes. When the guest is compatible with the residents, it's quite an experience. There's nothing like sharing your life (or even just part of it) with someone who appreciates it to make you enjoy it even more. But when that someone else just takes without giving -- or worse, denigrates your life -- it can have just as much impact in the other direction.
There are things I'd love to do if I could share them with someone I thought would like them, but they just aren't worth the effort to do alone.

I agree on both statements. Paris is awesome to relax. (at least if you avoid the other annoying tourists).
And that it desintregrates your money.
