Breathe in, I whispered,
to your soft, pink cheek.
Snow floated gently
from the window to your lips,
making you gasp awake.

Open your eyes, I prayed,
and the most verdant green
spilled from your lashes.
The world stopped in awe;
my own breath hitched.
It rained, a fresh, spring rain
and voices bloomed in lieu of flowers.

Come to me, I dared, extending my hand.
But one step forward, and two steps back,
all force and uncertainty,
you fell
and I
couldn't
catch
you.

The clouds cleared,
and
I forgot.

Ruby red, the dress you wore
When seven gales serenaded you;
the whitest pearls adorned your neck,
but the black of mourning crept close by.

I forgot
that winter promised it would return
to fetch the laughter you bred with your small hands.

Don't go, I pleaded,
but your eyes looked past me
to the frail clouds above.
Did you know
that in heaven
it's always, always spring?
I asked while
my flooded heart said goodbye.
