But the scrappy junior soon discovered that extracting herself from Gracie's grip would take more than effort and bluster. She rolled this way and that but couldn't achieve more than a few moments of partial separation, let alone taking the top position in their scramble. Gracie's legs remained clamped around some part of Jilian's 5'5 frame despite her best efforts, and when the sticky Auburn senior reached around to slam her gloved fist directly into Jillian's jaw, she recognized the depth of her trouble. She'd given up her back in a losing gamble to stand up, but Gracie's weight pressing down on her, her legs sweeping Jilian's nascent base out from under her, made the prospect of escaping back to her feet feel more like a pipe dream.

When she'd been the one on top, initiating their takedowns, Jillian had felt invincible. But now that the situation had shifted, she wondered if she'd regret not doing everything in her power to finish this fight. Jilian grabbed at the free arm that hung in front of her, desperate for a limb of her own to control, and pondered which way to move. There had to be some next step, some direction that wouldn't further disadvantage her. She just needed to make it to the end of the round. Could she spring forward to try and untangle her captured leg? Or twist to the side of her free leg and shrimp free like she'd done a hundred times in practice?

Another hammerfist shook her from her pondering and reintroduced the auburn skinned wrestler to the immediacy of her peril. When no obvious answer revealed itself Jillian tucked her chin downwards—that much she remembered even in her moment of panic—and fought for her tournament life.
