“20 seconds Kenzie, you can do it, stay calm!”
I was flexible but this was pushing my limits. I decided to push up with my right leg and flip Kennedy over so that she was facing down to the mat. There, she’d have to use her back muscles to pull back on my lower leg. Unfortunately, she had strong back muscles. She had my ankle secured near her head with both of her hands, and I punched at her exposed ribs. She winced in pain but didn’t let go, making a last ditch effort to pull back before time ran out in the first period.
“Stop,” the referee yelled as he heard the horn. Kennedy let up reluctantly and roughly extracted herself from above me. I got up as confidently as I could, testing to see if my leg still functioned. I made it to the corner where coach Nate met me with a stool. He starting rubbing life back into my left thigh and down my calf as I drank a small bit of water. Kennedy sat in her corner sipping water as if it were afternoon tea.
