Not bad! You're manually adjusting the points in the control cage, right? Do you have to do that throughout the animation or can you set it procedurally based on the bone angle?

I should look into lattices and control cages, I've just been using several extra bones per joint to push and pull things around... it works eventually but it's a headache to get there.

I make a single animation of the arm bending 100 degrees.  I made two adjustment key frames (one in the middle, one at the end).  These changes were then transferred into the model as morph shapes and were then auto-triggered as her elbow bends.  Which software do you use?

Makes sense. I've been using Blender, it's surprisingly solid, especially considering that it's free.

Blender may have limitations that non-free programs don't, but right now my main limitation is my skill and technical knowledge so at this point it doesn't really matter which program I use... might as well enjoy it while I can!
