In in the middle of the story, something similar to this scene plays out. Maybe that's why I like this piece so much;when I wrote that a year ago, this is exactly how it looked in my mind.

Canon is something in a franchise that ties in to another part of a franchise (spin-off), Non-canon is a spin-off that doesn't tie in with the mainstream franchise. For example, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Sonic Boom TV, they have the same characters from the original, but it doesn't affect the main part of the Sonic franchise, ergo the sonic boom redesigns are not the new modern designs, they are exclusive to the sonic boom universe.
