The scene that always sticks with me for Jasmine was when she gives the hungry child a fruit, not knowing that she needs to pay for it. It's a very defining moment for her character. It establishes her as being extremely compassionate, but also highlights just how sheltered she's been. I'm also rather fond of the way in which Jasmine seems baffled by the fact that her father still insists that she marry so that someone can rule once he's long gone. In Jasmine's mind, I suspect she believes that she can rule on her own. At least, that's what I'd like to think. Of course, it could also be that she's disinterested entirely in ruling and would much rather be just like everyone else (which is most likely given everything she says and does).

Man, I feel like this has been in my inbox forever. We recently changed from Cable to Direct TV and ever since then our internet has been super unreliable. Anyway, yes I love that scene with Jasmine. You do learn so much about her from that one incident. I also agree with what you said about her bewilderment regarding the marriage arrangement. I'm also inclined to lean towards the opinion that she's rather not rule at all, especially since she was willing to run away just to be free. I don't know that she's disinterested in ruling altogether. It's just the stipulations that come with it. I think she cares about both her looming responsibilities and about her country but she doesn't think being queen is worth spending a lifetime with someone she didn't choose. Can't say I blame her there.

Do you think Jasmine wants to be a monarch that's for the people? That doesn't hide away in a palace? That shares the wealth?
I get a very anti-monarchy vibe from her.

I really don't know, to be quite honest. I think she has great potential to be that kind of monarch, especially since she didn't shy away from the peasant children. There was a sincerity in her actions that shows she really cares and isn't just being fake. I tend to think that when she left the palace, she had no clue about hunger or poverty. She was sheltered within the lavish comforts of the palace. I think her intentions for leaving were actually selfish in that she didn't want to feel trapped, and then when she got outside she realized she bit off more than she could chew. I think that she is the kind of person who, after learning of the poverty in her kingdom, would not want to shy away but help in any way she could. I think she wouldn't necessarily want to "be in charge", but would want to be the voice of the people and to help them. I think she's kind of like me. I would want to do anything I could to help, but not be in the spotlight and get the attention. Jasmine would be the kind of person that sees the need, and then sets action into motion by working behind the scenes, doing this and that, offering advice to whomever is in charge and being very capable of swaying that person the way she wants them to go without having the burden of actually being in charge herself. I don't get a strong leader-vibe from her in the traditional since of the word "leader". I see in her someone who is able to make others do what she wants them to do, in the best sense. Like how she got Jafar into trouble for supposedly executing Aladdin. Jafar got verbally raked by the Sultan and Jasmine got off scot-free even though she broke about a million rules when she ran a way. That's pretty darn good if you ask me! I'm not sure if I answered your questions but I hope I did. : )

You totally did! I could certainly imagine Jasmine ushering in a new era for Agrabbah by becoming a ruler for the people. I imagine she'd open the palace walls and start initiatives to help the impoverished children on the streets. Her being with Aladdin would further increase the possibility of this, particularly because he knows what it's like.

I would have liked to see how well Jasmine ruled as queen in films following Aladdin. Unfortunately both sequels were not good and didn't showcase Jasmine as a ruler. I guess seeing as how she's not the main character of her franchise we don't get to see her shine as much as she could.

You know, I don't think I've really ever seen the sequels. I know I'd seen some episodes of the TV series and I think I even own one of the sequels on VHS. Still, heck if I remember anything of them.

You're not missing much. Disney's straight-to-video sequels tend to be so so at best. Far cries from the originals to be sure.

I've seen very few of them, but that seems to be the case. One of the Cinderella ones wasn't too bad.

I've seen them both. One is an anthology, while the other is more of an actual movie. They're not too bad. They certainly help to flesh out her character more.

I know, right? I mostly just got burned out after Pocahontas' piece didn't do so well. I'd really wanted to do Esmeralda, in the style I mentioned, plus Meg dress in gladiator gear. Then do Mulan.

Well, my Meg feature is coming up next and I have yet to do Mulan as well...just sayin'.
Really though, I understand getting burned out so if you're done with the series that's okay. You're got to do what you enjoy or else, what's the point?
