I wonder where she found that enormous pearl...

I'm very pleased with how this one turned out. My first completed mermaid. I already have an idea for a second one. Addicted much? The scan was pretty good on this one. Her hair looks the same color as her tail here, but on paper I actually colored it more of an aquamarine shade. I had a feeling that wouldn't show up, but oh well. Her skin has slightly more of a warm tone than what came through on the scanner. I wanted her skin to have a pearl like shade. Something different I tried that looks better on the real thing. I'm really proud of her hair piece. I designed that one myself. I'm also happy with the scales, although it was quite tedious. I'm not so happy with the fin. I think I'll do something different next time. The plant life and such around her is just what I came up with from imagination. It's nothing that is supposed to be accurate or anything. Just something to create atmosphere. She's taking that massive pearl back to her private little grotto. Mermaids do like pretty things after all.

I used this lovely stock provider as ref for the upper body pose faestock.deviantart.com/art/Si…
Materials: Prismacolor colored pencils for all the coloring, Derwent watercolor pencils for the water, white gel pen for the sparkle effect.

Hope you guys like!

Thank you so much! That means so much to me. I'm glad you like the expression. I really tried hard to make it look like she is gazing at the pearl. This one took me a lot of time to do so I'm glad all that paid off in the end. Thanks again for the awesome comment again, I really appreciate it!

She look marvelous and so delicate. I'm speechless in front of her tail, it's so shiny and detailled, with all the scales. There is a lot of work here and it totally worth it. I also really like the way you did her skin, with the few scales on her breast. Plus I love her flowing hairs, I like the way they seem to move with the water.

Thank you so much sweetie! I really did work very hard on the details, especially the tail so I'm very glad you noticed. I like the skin too, and I admit that I got the idea for the scaling at her breast from other artists on here. I think it's a very natural look. I'm glad I was able to achieve the look of hair flowing in the water. I really wanted that to look good. Again, thank you for the wonderful comment! It means so much to me!

Holy @#%&, this is awesome!Β  The hair and scales are so shiny with pencils and a gel pen!Β  Nice cool colors, too.Β  I think the skin is still a cool pearl color and not too warm looking.Β  She really looks underwater with the flowing hair.Β  I would have stopped after the character, but you added nice scenery, too.Β  Question about the water color pencils.Β  I have had a set for a while, but I don't use them.Β  Did you color the water first and then use a wet brush on top?

(I also have watercolor markers that I don't know to use.)

You make my blush my friend! I was pretty happy with this one. I do like the scales, although soon after I started them I was asking myself; "what is wrong with you, crazy woman!" But all the tedious effort paid off because I do like the result. I really wish that the scanner had picked up on the slight pinkish tone that I gave the skin, but that's scanners for you. Believe me, I really didn't relish the idea of coloring that background, but I really feel like a good mermaid piece needs atmosphere. The trick when coloring a detailed drawing is to bounce back and fourth between the subject and the background. That way you don't feel like you're spending so much time on one thing. It really worked for me here and thanks for noticing!

As far as the watercolor pencils go, yeah the idea is to lay down the color and then apply a wet brush, but I find that using a wet brush will really warp your paper. I actually used this: www.michaels.com/Colored-Penci… It's an Artist's Loft brand colored pencil blender. You can get them a Michaels. I think it's alcohol based so it's wet and you can apply it over the watercolor pencil to get the same effect without over-saturating your paper. The only problem with this particular blender is that it runs out of liquid pretty quickly but they're relatively cheap and I like it a lot better than just using water. You may be able to use a marker blender as well, but I've not tried it. I've never used watercolor markers before so I have no idea about those.

Oh, cool, a blender for those things!Β  Β  I've used a marker blender on Prismacolor pencils before and it gave them a watery blurred look.Β  I've never actually thought to use one on watercolor pencils.Β  I'd like to look into this pencil blender.

Scanners...Β  They either don't show the colors or they super show details that make it look worse, such as showing every layer you made shading making it look "less professional."

Chalaya In reply to ErikRoger [2013-09-09 13:34:19 +0000 UTC]

I'm really not sure how a regular marker blender would work with watercolor pencils since I've never tried it, but I would assume that it's much the same fluid as in the pencil blender. I'd try a Copic blender first if you have one, since it has the paintbrush type nib. The Prismacolor marker blender has the hard nibs so I don't know how well it would work or if it makes a difference. I know for a fact that the Artists Loft blender works great. I've never used it on standard pencils though.

Scanners are a blessing and a curse. It's easier to scan a picture and post it than it is to take a photo, but at the same time, the scanner is so unpredictable as far as what it's going to do to your artwork. I have a huge problem with it "washing out" my colors. Like in this mermaid piece, her hair is supposed to be slightly more aquamarine than blue, but on the scanned version it just looks blue. It's like the scanner takes away the little subtle things that really makes the piece stand out. It's a bit disheartening and I just don't have the time to spend hours in Photoshop adjusting the tones. I guess all us traditional artists just have to deal with it.

What a beautiful piece of art! Really well done!
The mermaids colorscheme looks amazing and I really like the result of all the work on the scales on her fin. I'm a big fan of mermaids myself, so I can't wait to see more mermaids from you.
The scanner made her skin appear too cold and grey but I can imagine how it looked on the paper. The Hairpiece looks amazing. Really detailed but not too heavy because it's made of all this undersea-stuff. Great idea here!
Also I think you did a great job on the plants and stones around. There's really a deepsea-atmosphere here

Thank you so much! I'm really glad you like it. I knew I wanted to do a blue mermaid and I think it turned out really well. Those scales were a lot of work, but it was worth it. I definitely plan to do more mermaids. Her skin was actually supposed to be really pale. I wanted it to look like a pearl, but the scanner did take some of the pinkish tones it has. But it still looks more or less the way I wanted it to look. Thanks for noticing the hairpiece and the background as well. It means a lot to me when people notice all the little things. Thanks so much again for the awesome comment!
