quick rule for these and other conjoined trains, if you're talking about both of them in general, then use they/them, but if you're only talking about one of them, then use the pronouns that they use. ( for this case both of them are males)

backstory: these two were very normal before Team Rocket took them from scrap to preform various awful experiments on them so see how non faceless engines work. (they were very much Team Rocket's lab rats) and when they came to Sodor in June of this year, they spilled the beans of Leo's plan (while being coupled up to some bean cars) and once Sir Topham heard the whole thing, he decided to save them from the lab and after Brain requested to be normal BR class 08s. they work in Knapford shunting yard, where they sometimes try to prove that they'd be a better head shunter then Charlie.

bio: Pinky is often very quirky, unfocused, forgetful, immature, friendly, open-minded, sweet, kind, polite, sensitive, gentle, joyful, patient, naive, friendly and loyal. Despite the biffs and insults he took from the Brain.

Brain is bitter, rude, short-tempered, clever, self-centered, scheming, angry, irritable, grumpy, sarcastic and deadpan, but he has a soft and tender heart. He is often aggravated by Pinky's dim-witted comments and claims he's going to biff him if he doesn't stop - a threat he quite often follows through on. On rare occasions, it becomes increasingly obvious he does care for Pinky. The sentiment, however, is usually overshadowed by Brain's ambition for his most recent scheme.
