Progress slides and walkthrough on the illustration I just posted.
1) Rough sketch to capture the general idea, energy and composition of the piece.
2) Quick gesture drawing of the figures to act as a base for armor build up.
3) Cloth and armor added on top of the figures. Background is also blocked in. Everything is mostly simple shapes and drawn with gesture and energy. This is an important step in the drawing.
4) Sketch is refined and detailed to block out the main design aspects of the characters. Details are added by following the energy and directional movement from the previous steps. You want to keep the energy from the gestural sketch as much as possible to prevent your piece from feeling stiff or lifeless.
Background is also tweaked to better suit the composition.
5) Cleanup of the linework to make it easier to see when painting. Linework is not overly detailed as everything will just be painted over.
6) Establishing the general colors of this piece. I wanted to be more illustrative with this piece and not be so hung up on realism. The idea was a cool green background and very warm contrasted figures in the foreground that pop out.
7) Lighting and contrast established.
8) General detailing
9) Background is cooled down and the contrast and details are reduced. This pushes the background further into space and further emphasizes the focus on the characters.
10) Finishing details. It’s at this step where you should spend your time detailing, NOT the earlier steps.
