used to make these when i was in high school 
i made stars that were really small, may be half a cm, and hands really hurt that time, but it was worth it
yeah you could use any printed paper, but choose those which are kinda tough, like in wrappers so it wouldn't be hard when you kind of make them bulge

where can you buy the paper for the stars? i use to have the paper to make 'em but i don't any more!

You can usually find them at asian gift shops. If not, then you can always take a sheet of patterned paper and cut strips out. The width should be about 1 cm thick.
