Atsuma Ikari is the mother of Takeru Ooyama and wife of Takeshi Ooyama, as well as the blood sister of Yui Ikari. She was the role model for Tesshin Kushiya during his ten years in isolation, and is considered one of the greatest threats to Takeru Yamato upon his revival, despite being a member of Kamigari.

Yet Atsuma is perhaps the greatest martial artist in Robert Vermillion's time and is also his greatest nemesis. Years earlier, Robert Vermillion had arrived on a vast grass-field to challenge Astuma in personal combat in order to see if his Vermillionryu style of Anatsukenryu Karate is stronger than hers.

It was a titanic duel which tested and pushed both fighters to the brink of complete exhaustion but in the end, Robert Vermillion was defeated by Atsuma. Instead of showing arrogance, Robert is humbled by her yet they became great friendly rivals since she never had such a terrific match in her life.

Ten years before 2006 VD tournament, she was challenged by Tesshin under the orders of Ouken Yamato, who considered her to be a threat due to her bloodline. She was caring for Inaho at the time, and during the fight shamed Tesshin as a father, asking if his behavior was that of a true parent.

Despite imitating her style, Tesshin was ruthlessly defeated by her when the true power of her fighting style became known and broken by his inability to kill a woman who has humbled him, Tesshin goes into self-imposed exile but not before he leaves the care of Inaho in her care.

After this, Atsuma expands her dojo's ranks and becomes a major guest instructor in the Vermillion Dojo, especially when it comes to children and the women. In fact, she trains her niece Lita Kino in tapping into her spiritual energy.

Soon afterwards, the Kamigari were wiped out by Emperor Talpa's Dark Warlords due to the potential threat they posed to the plans of the Netherworld.

As one of Shinji's aunts, Atsuma is also his sensei as well as Takeru yet she forms a close bond with her nephews and nieces. In fact, she enters the 2006 VD, and VD War tournaments since she missed the excitement and thrill of being in a sporting event.

She secures the Valkyrie War Empress title and remains as champion for the next 5 years before she retires undefeated.

Her primary friendly rivals are Robert Vermillion, his grandson Anthony Vermillion, her son Takeru, her ward Inaho, her niece Lita Kino and her nephew Shinji.
