Shinji Ikari, the Co-Crown Heir of the Ikari-Phenex Clan, has a number of childhood friends who became his rivals and among them is Ichigo Kurosaki. Both are martial artists and while Ichigo kept losing to Tatsuki Arisawa, he is eager to go all out with someone who knew how to give him a serious workout besides their common friend. Of course, Ichigo and Shinji can be stubborn to the point that they would fight in order to vent a lot of frustration and can endure a lot of punishment they each can dish out on the other.

Because Retsu is one of Shinji's mothers, he is requested to cross-train Ichigo and never one to say no to his mother, he does while smirking alongside Yoruichi.
