This is amazing i've been doing some study of armors myself recently, as a game designer more than an artist really.

That armor seems to be made out of cheap lightweight metal (like Aluminum) research metals and how they look, and armor structures as well as their pros and cons. (Chainmail offers better protection than most armors do for example, but at the same time it's one of the heaviest types of armor since you wear it like a shirt and all the weight rests on the same area (shoulders) and it also weighs you down a lot more since it "hangs" on you creating drag, Plate is rather restrictive, more expensive and less protective than chainmail contrary to popular belief (everything depends on the angle the weapon hits it from) but using layers of plates (see the stomach, he can now more freely bend forwards/backwards) where the joints are can loosen the range of motion limitations of plate armor. Platemail/scalemail is the lightest type but also least protective, if well made it can usually stop things from penetrating your skin, but it offers very little protection from the impact of a blow, this is what you've usually seen Samurai wear, but they wear a heavy full-body variant of this neglecting much of it's lightweight bonus.

But do study of your own on this. I may have gotten some things wrong (there are a lot of different opinions on these things on the net)

If you look closely at the images on kitesail's site, you will clearly see (from the reflection differences) that the breastplate and helmet seem to be made from a different material than the rest of the armor, assumingly because those are so big pieces so they were trying to save cash. The other parts look like they're made out of sturdier metal as the less reflective surface would suggest, this does not mean that high density metals are always less reflective than low density ones, it's just a mental thing. I could be wrong however and the other parts are just made out of brushed or raw aluminum while the helmet and breastplate are polished (i.e. all could be made from the same type of metal) which makes it look different.

Stainless Steel is actually a rather dense metal mixture. 15-5PH mixture (google it) is one of the most dense variants of it.

Titanium is one of the best metals for armor because of it's extreme strength to weight ratios.

I notice that most high density steel mixtures tend to be of a darker color (some are even just completely black) Osmium (is tougher than diamond), Platinum and Iridium are also extremely strong. When designing things (armor or anything else) I like to find as many real life references to it as I can and base my designs around that (for example if I want a metal device/armor/weapon to look really strong but light at the same time, I'd base it off titanium, if I want it to look unbreakable I'd base it off of Osmium and if I want it to have good quality vs price ratio I'd go for that 15-5PH, etc)

Since this awesome image is based on my own personal armor, I can give some insight.

Everything is polished stainless steel but different thickness. Helmet and cheastplate is 2-3mm, the arms and legs is 1-1,5 mm. Gorget and shoulder is 1,5 mm. Its seems perhaps more shiny since the photo is edited with color corrections and such.

I dont agree with your argument that platemail/scalemail vs chainmail. Chainmail was very effective, easy to make and could easy be repaired - and thats why it was popular but the problem with chainmail was it did not protect effective against thrust weapons as spears, or arrows. Platearmor was alot more effective, so much that it became a terror on the battlefield. Chainmail aint that heavy, around 10kg for a harnesk. Full platearmor is about 20-30kg.

But then again when we speak about "effectivness" of an armor we should never talk about one single piece or material, since combinations was used. The most effective armor in my opinion was gambeson, a really thick fabric jacket and was highly used through out the middle ages. A gambeson with platearmor was very effective, the plate stopped the piercing and dangerous that would trauma the body from any weapon, and the gambeson reduced the shock impact by a ton - even stopped arrows to reach the body if they manage to pierce the plate armor.

Cool my point on chainmail with weight was that because it just sits on your shoulders it's more weight distributed over a smaller area, it's comparable to carrying a 10kg bag on your shoulders if it weighs 10kg. That's a lot of pain compared to 20-30kg rather evenly distributed across your waist, shoulders and arms. It feels heavier when you have something that clings to you and "hangs" rather than something that's solidly wrapped around you.

The thing about plate is that it needs to be really thick or out of a really sturdy material to be well protective. You can put 3mm of iron(don't know about stainless steel) into a plate armor, some swords will be able to actually cut through it. Perhaps not all the way to the body in one stroke (although that all comes down to technique of the wielder and the sharpness of the blade), but enough to make at least a good hole. Chainmail offers stronger resistance to slashes than plate because of how it's composed of rings. It's much harder to cut through because of it's spacing (say you manage to cut into one ring, you'd need to hit from a different angle to cut the one next to it since they're not lined up the same way) I'd also say chainmail is pretty strong against thrusting weapons actually, the weapon needs to make it all the way through a ring to penetrate (which is hard to achieve, even with something like a dagger; it needs to be something like a rapier to get through). The problem with chainmail is that there is no shock absorption in it so blunt weapon hits will be almost just like taking a direct hit without armor.

But I guess there are many ways to see it. In the end I think they all come down to preference (and perhaps affordability), and like you said they were usually used in combinations. Effectiveness also depends on the wearer. The more you know about how to use your armor, the more effective it gets (what angles it's strongest at, where it is thickest, etc) and how well they can take advantage of that.

Chainmail is yeah much easier to wear. Its weight is distributed over the shoulders and waist (When wearing a chainmail, it's important to wear a belt to heavily reduce the weight). And yeah in that sense, chainmail is a clear winner

Dont agree with the thickness thou, a plate armors effectivness aint all in the thickness but in how well crafted it is. A well crafted armor with reforged edges or, like in my armor, a pointed belly reduces a blow and thrusts. Swords was never used as a cutting weapon against armor - ever. It was pointless and fruitless, most what we know of medival fightingstyles with swords used it more as a blunt weapon or a tool trying to trip the opponent to the ground. Plate armor was so effective that most knight when facing another armored opponent used other weapons like a maul, mace or warhammer. Which using heavy blunt attacks with one or more spike.

There was a very good reason why heavy armor was popular among the nobles during the late medevial times and it was that they did protect the wearer very effective. Look how the armor design evolved during the ages and how the weapons evolved to counter it. If plate armor where expensive to make, heavy to wear and did not protect against even a single blow from a sword (and chainmail would), fighters would never used heavy armor at all. It was only after the inventing of gunpower where suddenly armor lost it effectivness that we suddenly see they dropped the armor completly. Chainmail is effective, for its low cost, especially if its combined with other armor as gambeson, but compare with plate it is very useless.

Dont really agree either with your theory that the hole in the rings would give extra protection. Sure they did protect against slashing attacks sorta effective and made them bashing insted (which, sure was perhaps to have broken bones than bleeding to death). But against a piercing attack, as long the weapon was pointy it proved that those hole was very uneffective since the pointed weapon wedge itself in and the rings splits, losing its advantage. There are ton of videos proving this, this is well perhaps the best one I could find that seems to have a real produced chainmail: www.youtube.com/watch?v=19qEUJ… - And want to show this where they show the powerful impact of an warhammer, sure the chainmail seems to be made of a poorer material but hopefully understand the strength some of the later medieval weapons had.

If you are intrested to know more, this is one of the better documentaries I have found on youtube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cq03z9…
