This is so beautiful! How do i put this... I really love the color palette, and the idea itself is great!
Also you managed to make a simple but pretty background that makes ppl focus on the bottle great job!

Hi there! Found your piece through  and was really drawn to it!

I think this piece and the concept is pretty neat and a great take on the "genie in a bottle" subject. The colours you've used are very well picked and your oil painting skill is very good! The dark blues give the appearance of night-time and I personally feel it adds a sense of mystery to the image. The candle is very well painted and bright, and the illumination on the wall is well blended and really draws the eye to the light source. Overall I think this is a very skilful and creative piece!

Here's some of the criticism you've asked for!
1) Smoke: try to make it more wispy, and a little less controlled. The direction it is flowing is good, but it seems to be the same density all around; smoke (unless extremely heavy and dark) tends to be denser in some places and more transparent in others. I would study some smoke (or photos) from a candle to see where it is denser, which tends to be right near the candle source and follows up in one strand with the surrounding smoke becoming semi-transparent.

2) Glass Lamp: The top of the lamp is very well done, you've added highlights to the curves of the glass. If you did this to the larger, bottom half of the lamp I feel the lamp would be more dimensional and fit with the top half, as well as fit the image better.

3) Lighting: The candle in the jar is great as it is, in my opinion! The lighting in the background, however well done, could be a little softer. The lighting at the bottom of the glass is great as being vibrant, however the top half is further away from the light source and could be a little softer, to draw attention back to the smoke. I would just use a little less paint and blend the light harder into the dark background as it gets further away from the lamp.

Hope that helps! A great piece to see!

Hiya! Thanks for the in-depth comment!

Yeah I've struggled with smoke. I might do some other practice shots with it.

My main concern for the bottom half is potentially obscuring the djinn in the bottom half with the shading and the details of the lamp which is what I was struggling against. I also wasn't entirely sure how to render it.

Thank you for your constructive critique! I shall consider your advice

You're very welcome for the comment!

Regarding the obstruction of the figures in the bottom half of the bottle, I think if you place the highlights accurately you may cover a portion of them (maybe like a bit of arm or something) but the dimensional effect would make them appear more trapped in the bottle, which I personally feel would add more depth or drama (not sure of the right word haha). I would just have a quick look on how light reflects on rounded glass to see if any of them would fit your bottle; they can be as thin as you like as well so not to obstruct your beautiful figures!

I understand if you don't want to do it on this piece! I know what it's like to not want to cover up something already good, and oil painting is quite fussy with where it wants to go XD But again, this piece is still well done! Maybe just try some sketches and practise for the next round!
Hope that helps!

Hmm, maybe I'll try editing that as a photomanipulation on my computer and see if it works out. Thanks for the tips!

Thanks I thought I'd expand it a bit more. After staying away from it for a while it makes a bit more sense.
