This is an incredibly good design ._.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I think I see some Final Fantasy influences.
Also, love the gas-glowing thing between its ribs and the vanishing tail and the sharpy head with those glowing-eye like things.
Maybe I like it because it looks like something I'd draw...

What's the background to this piece? IE: what type of project was it created for etc?

This is part of my senior project for my bachelors in game design. The goal of my project is to tell a story through concept art. As I linked in my comments section, I've been also working on some environments. I'm only three weeks into the project, so I still have much work to do. I'll have more to show and talk about as time passes.
