Description

This is Alcatraz Island in the middle of the San Francisco Bay.  It was a very famous prison until 1963, but it’s closed now and the buildings are all in ruins.  Now it’s a very lucrative tourist destination for the National Park Service.  Wikipedia claims that no one ever escaped from Alcatraz, but that’s not what I remember the docents saying way back in the 90’s when I was there.  Here’s the list of all the escapes www.alcatrazhistory.com/escape…   when someone did get out, they listed them as ‘missing presumed drowned’, which is kind of convenient.  However, the ocean around the bay is very treacherous, and the water is very cold, and full of great white sharks and it’s unlikely that anyone could swim through it to shore.  The most famous of these was dramatized as a 1979 movie starring Clint Eastwood… and here’s where things get surreal.

Clint Eastwood actually did the ‘escape from Alcatraz’.

In 1951, he was riding in a plane that crashed outside San Francisco Bay outside of Point Reyes which is a couple miles from Alcatraz, only not sheltered in the bay like Alcatraz is.  It was October.  He swam 2 or 3 miles to shore against the current. www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity…   while dragging the injured pilot along and saving his life.  At night.  He says he didn’t know about the sharks, but if you were a shark, would you tangle with this guy?  I mean, would you?  Do ya feel lucky?

Someone feels lucky , but he doesn’t count.

And I love to draw with a pen in my copybook Golden Gate Bridge and all the Bay view. Do it from imagination. Actually, structure of that Bridge be some kind of inspiration for me, don't know.

P.S. May be, the island rocks are looks to contrastic. You know, I talk about an aerial perspective. |

First thought: can I have a skateboard and a waiting ambulance, please?
Second thought: if the lighting were really that awesome, I would have stayed on Alcatraz!
Third thought: I'm a gal who's always been fond of Eastwood movies... so if I'd been a shark- heck, I'd have given him a lift!

The contrast of light and darkness in this piece (especially in the clouds) is wonderfully ominous. I almost don't want to look to the right its so dark. The town feels intricate and detailed with the way the light refracts off the windows and the shaded dips between the buildings. Nicely done lighting on Alcatraz itself.

Thank you!  I really wanted to do a subtle contrast from very diffuse shadow on the left and hard shadow on the right.  So it's like surreal night in the shadows and day in the sunlight and I think it worked well!  I guess that storm finally rolled in because I'm getting drowned in rain this morning.

Nice work. If Clint Eastwood was swimming 2 or 3 miles it seems an absolute reality that this thing could be realised someone from the list of escapes.

Thanks!  They've got 5 guys missing and unaccounted for.  Then again, no one ever picked them up afterwards...that would be the hard part, I'd think.

That's okay, they knew about him.

Awesome picture by the way, reminds me of concept art for movies. The colouring theme works very well, you separated the two cool colours blue and green with that strip of cream making up the city. I love it.

Thank you!  I certainly wish I had the speed and color control that concept artists do! But they tend to use a bunch of photos to photobash things too and I don't.  Glad you like it!

Your attention to detail is always top-quality.

I had the privelege of visiting Alcatraz on a special Ranger tour, a collaboration between San Francisco Maritime NHP and Alcatraz. We were shown closed off and restricted areas of the old prison, like the literal “Psych Ward”, the Gun Gallery, and an area where the previous structure can still be seen, basically a basement of the old Citadel.

I wrote a paper in college wherein I talked a little about Alcatraz.

Ooh cool!  Cooks tour!  How interesting!  ....am I getting that right that there's a San Francisco Maritime Nautical Highway Patrol?  not just the coast guard?  *pulls over containership "sir do you know how fast you were going?"*  *containership catches on fire*  *drifts accidentally into bay bridge. again.*
