Description

Nice save, Kore, but he still knows what you really think.  I don't think Grant appreciates his new full-time job.

Synopsis:

Aging telepath Evil Overlord Xander has traded his youthful dream of joining the US military and using his superpowers to benefit humanity for over-the-hill cynicism, self-imposed exile on his private zoo-for-crazy-people Eynhallow Island, and a serious case of May-December midlife crisis.  And technically it's only kidnapping if she tries to leave.

Let's be honest, "babysitting a temperamental telepath" was already Grant's full-time job.

Oooooh is he really devious enough to fake weakness in front of her to give her confidence?

Hmm... Is he looking for company or just a worthy opponent?  I wonder if Shane is going to have some surprise role to play in this story.

Poor Grant.  Stuck babysitting two telepaths.  As if one wasn't already challenging enough...

chateaugrief In reply to CrimsonSunset218 [2017-07-23 00:23:57 +0000 UTC]

Oh he's much much more devious than that.  He's winding everyone up like a spring, and is going to release it all at once.  Evil plan ahoy.  Of which Shane figures in centrally.  Hey, Xander's already told everyone exactly what he's going to do, way back in chapter 1.

Poor Grant.  Grant has already guessed the entire show.  Hence nagging.

Well, right... but whose going to take Xander seriously when it's only Chapter 1?  Surely he can't have meant everything he said... right?  XD  He might still change... right?  XP

Xander should know that he needs other people. Humans are sociable animals and one will go crazy if isolated for a long period of time.

the one thing Xander has never managed to be is isolated.  everyone else lives inside his head, but that's got to be a really empty way to deal with people. maybe he has more friends than he knows.

I meant he needs true friends, the resistance is planning to overthrow him and the rest are just afraid. He needs someone who likes him for who he is. A REAL best friend.

You're exactly right, that's what he's angling for.  In his own difficult to follow, but completely logical way.

Xander actually looked alarmed. He couldn't pick up that coffee cup? Now that could be a problem he's avoiding--perhaps his powers are starting to diminish, and he wants to reach a goal only he knows before he slips too far.

That's what it looks like right now, doesn't it?  He's playing a dangerous game here, right out in the open for everyone to see.  Heartlastered firmly to sleeve.

Yeah, I've been seeing too much "identifiable" with our man Xander, forgetting that he's a human bomb of Doctor Manhattan-level power.

manhattan: I suppose it's inevitable.
xander: I brought beer.  Sucks to be a Yankees fan.  Can we do Los Angeles next?

Wait, have you read the Darth Bane Trilogy by Drew Karpyshyn? If not, then interesting minds think alike.

I have not kept up on my Star Wars since Episode II drove me to utter despair.  But if it's good, I'll certainly check it out!  Can't be bad, right, Sith are always awesome.  Join the dark side, step in time!  I would love to read a good dark side story come to think of it.

Darth Bane created the Rule of Two, had living armor before it was cool, and the series is mainly his POV. But those money-grubbing, lazy Disney Executives made the entire thing non-canon.
I asked because your story has a bunch of similarities to the second and third books.

I'll definitely check it out.  and i'll keep my eye out for those similarities because i always love to see those!  i'll never forgive the disney execs for non-canoning Thrawn. if they're going to play canon games, this is my canon game:  by the talented PHUZface1

Disney brought Thrawn back for Rebels and had Zahn do a prequel for him (because they have a functioning brain cell between them and so could recognize the genius of Zahn.)
Thrawn is my favorite Star Wars character. I actually tried to model my behavior after him and it worked. Focus on the task at hand, use all the information you have, don't let a failure cause you to make mistakes, make people feel appreciated, etc. The only thing that could bring him down were multiple cases of unknown unknowns. I've learned from his mistakes though, I actually am helping clean up the home of my non-Human assassins/bodyguards. By which I mean I pick up after my dog when he takes a poop.

I did read Zahn's new Thrawn book.  It was pretty good, but I would have liked a bit more character development and maybe a bigger 'gotcha' moment for Thrawn to show off the old brain in the ending.  Those are really tough to do though. Zahn's got a killer sense for plot connectivity, I always love to study his books.

How about The Goblin Corps by Ari Marmell?
Or The Conqueror's Shadow, also by Ari Marmell. The sequel to it was shit, but it works fine as a standalone.
