Description A new painting of Aeolus Aeolus is a horse I like to paint every now and then. He helps me see how much progress I've made, and if I'm going in the right direction. I think I have improved a lot since my last painting of him... Even though I find cremellos incredibly difficult to paint properly xD

I wasn't going for this bright, glowing effect but I really liked the look of it. It makes him seem angelic

I really like how you made the mane look so soft and flowy owo how do you paint your manes?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Chellosia In reply to Karire [2014-04-03 23:43:14 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I actually think the mane in this painting turned out the softest out of all of my paintings haha

I just started with a kind of middle colour as a base. Then I added slight shadows and highlights in strokes, but very undefined and with a larger brush maybe 9 px. Then I went back in with a 5px and added more little details including some green-yellow hairs to tie into the background. Lastly I used a 1px brush to add the small hairs and fly aways. I blurred the mane a bit closer to the withers, the hair coming over his shoulder, the roots of the mane and then blurred the ends a bit too.

I hope that helps Β

Ah okay, thank you! When I paint manes it always ends up looking super awkward xD

It takes a lot of practice x) It's easy to make it look rigid or too perfect.

There are some really good hair tutorials here on DA you could look at?

AtelierKatyHaecker [2014-04-02 04:29:30 +0000 UTC]

how do you draw this?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Chellosia In reply to AtelierKatyHaecker [2014-04-02 15:52:05 +0000 UTC]

Hello, I'm not sure what you mean ^^'

If you mean tools, I use my Wacom Capture Tablet and Photoshop.

If you mean steps, then I started with rough line art, then blocked in colours, blended and started adding the fine details like the fur ^^ The background I used a textured brush, and started with dark colours building up to the lightest. Then I blurred it so it looks out of focus. I also blurred the horse's hindquarters a bit, as i felt it added some depth and the picture looked similar.

I hope I have answered your question

AtelierKatyHaecker In reply to Chellosia [2014-04-02 18:32:14 +0000 UTC]

thank you very much for this detailed answer.
Yes, it answered all may question, which was to be honest just one:
was it traditional art or something made digitally on your tablet/pc?
I myself only draw traditionally and know how difficult it is to draw such light horses
and I wondered how you did this.

THanks

Ohhh. Aha, I'm sorry I went into such unnecessary detail then ^^

I only paint digitally, and I too find painting lighter horses difficult. Cremellos especially though. It's so easy to make them look unnatural, or too dull.Β

No problem, glad I could answer your question Your traditional work is awesome!
