Description I finally decided to make another set for TF2! I'm gonna work with my friend and fellow modeler Dry (who collaborated with me on the Dota 2 International and Dota 2 Polycount sets) to make a themed set for the Sniper and one for the Spy (whose concepts are incoming) that sorta relate to each other. It's an idea that I've had since before TF2 even had cosmetic items, back in early 2008 ([link] ), and something I always wanted to see. We think it will be a challenge but technically possible and a pretty unique attempt at a misc. item, and that's super exciting.

Right now we're looking at the legs/shorts, elephant gun, and tilley hat for a total of three items. Once we get the Spy set all sorted out, we might possibly do more, or just leave it at that.

I'm mainly afraid that the legs might have too many polys and look a bit too detailed compared to his arms, otherwise great concept!

Dry's gonna have to be careful with the silhouette on the low and the texturing in particular, but I'm confident he'll pull it off.

Love the concept, but his legs would have to be a lot thinner to fit into the long pants in the character model, Snipes probably has legs like the Scout. I could see these as Engie's legs, though, no problem.

Well, the way it works in game in order to be technically possible is that the model of the legs and boots and shorts would have to fit OVER the geometry of the pants. It's pretty much only his skinny default legs that makes it possible in the first place.

Oh my god this is wonderful! I'm really excited about this, considering your high quality mods. one thing though- sniper appears to have really skinny legs but you've drawn them really thick. It's not a bad thing, but I'm curious as to what he might look like with skinnier legs to correspond with how his legs look like in pants.

Also, out of curiosity, have you ever thought of doing a fem sniper model? I'm genuinely curious as to what your take on her would be

Here's an early sketch I did when we were trying to figure out if we'd be able to pull off the shapes we need over the existing geometry of the pants and still keep anatomical/proportional accuracy: [link]

Unfortunately, he has no body group for legs, so anything we make has to fit over what is already there. Our goal is to get them modeled and skinned with the least possible amount of expanded geometry.

I was planning on doing a female sniper or demoman as my next female class, but at this point, I don't know when, if ever, I'll get to another one (as much as I'd like to). With all the dozens of hats and new stuff that gets added, it's become pretty much impossible just keeping the ones I have made up to date and I need to focus my outside-of-work projects :C But maybe someday!

BTW I rather enjoy your painting style. I've actually been trying to learn digital painting and well, I just don't get it. Do you have any tips?

Thanks! I don't have like "one" way of painting; sometimes I'll paint under a sketch and then paint detail over that, and sometimes if it's just something quick I'll block in forms with solid colors and start rendering them that way. I'll make a swatch of colors and sort of just paint similar to real paint.

When you're doing these themed sets, or any kind of stuff like this, what kind of research do you put behind it? The gun is just gorgeous - I wouldn't know from adam whether any of it is "accurate", but it LOOKS right. Do you do a lot of technical research before putting images together?

Yeah, first I do some research into how certain guns work and how they're used. Then I look up a bunch of different models of guns, scopes, and find some things I really like. I'll take elements from different sources, make some of my own changes and adjustments to the proportions to fit the rig/game style, stuff like that.

The legs/boots/shorts model will actually be fitting over his existing legs. The legs themselves are roughly the same size, but they'll be more tf2-styled in the actual texture.

Well you don't have to model every individual hair- just a simple hairy texture painted on his legs will do.

Well, styles work by swapping out parts of the mesh, not different textures.

Perhaps different degrees of hairyness? Like, "Shaven", "light coat", "thick coat", and "Chewbacca".
