Description
The rain streaked down the windows as the car sped down the road. What was at the end of the road? She didn’t know. All she knew was that the memories that had haunted her were almost 3 miles away now. A chime went off in her bag and she reached in to grab her phone. She looked at the name flashing on the LED screen and, with a small ounce of regret, placed it back into her bag. Her eyes wandered back to the dismal world outside, at the grey ocean that lapped silently against the even greyer sand. Grey, miserable, dark; that was all the colours and shades her world consisted of these days. The car slowed to make way for a handful of foolish beach goers. There was only one person on the dark sands now. She stared at the lone shadow trying to see through the fogged glass of the car windows.

The young man turned to look over his shoulder but the rain misted his features.

With trembling fingers she opened the car door and got out, ignoring her chaperones protests. The wind caught her hair making it sweep out behind her like one of the great storm clouds that had been on her horizon for many long weeks. He turned to face her fully, his eyes never leaving her own. With a gasp she leaped forward and dashed down onto the beach. Hope and shock beat in rhythm to her hearts frantic beats. Her feet sank deep into the sand but she pushed forwards falling time and time again. Each time she would grit her teeth, look at the man she had missed for so long and then pull herself free.
He’s still here……
Out of breath and blinded by tears she stopped before him. The rain cascaded down like a silk curtain around them, obscuring them from anyone’s view.
“You never said Goodbye” he murmured, half reaching out his hand to her touch her pale face.
“You never gave me a chance” she sobbed back taking his hand in her own and lacing her fingers through his.
He leaned forward and touched his forehead against hers.
“Just close you eyes” his voice was almost as distant as the wind. “Remember me always”
She closed her eyes and tried to memorise the feeling of his hand, his skin, his breath against her face. His smell, his eyes, his voice. There was nothing in her world but him.
The wind sighed and tugged at her clothing. She opened her eyes slowly, blinded by the sudden colours that had flooded her world. She clasped her now empty hands together and stared out at the glorious green sea. Her tears mixed with the rain as she stood alone.
“Always” she murmured into the air.
