Description I love a good deadline, really kicks my butt into gear with an idea I had day one :')

So what I wanted to do with this was aid in magic learning, and by that I mean Generate Electricity when Wynsiph residents may not have access to zells. Soooo why not have a creature that reacts to the ability for use and practice? We have plants and such that do that for others after all heh

Just a major heads up, I am no expert on the things I am about to ramble about. I'm going off some quick google searches (never a great start) and what I remember from Chemistry and Ecology in high school so long ago so don't kill me, its still a fantasy world I'm allowed to take some liberties
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Formal Name: Static Spinefish, or shortened to Static Spine
Other Names: Bandage Noses or Stats
Habitats: Freshwaters such as rivers or lakes
Size: Between 1-2 feet
Seasons: Summer - Autumn
Edible: Yes
Taste: Depending on the preparation method
However since I don't like fish I don't have the taste experience to describe this. They taste good as long as you don't overcook them to which the metal may burn though and leave a metallic aftertaste.

Why's it also known as The Bandage Nose?
The bright band over the nose area lock in the muscles that extend out when the fish feeds. As if that weren't enough to mimic a brightly coloured bandaid over the bridge of the nose, the muscles when extended further this illusion.

How does it generate electricity?
I tried to look into how electric eels do it and honestly it was too confusing for a 2-minute lesson, something about its nervous system. So essentially this fish has the same system.
The difference is it channels that electricity through its metallic skeleton and out through its spines. Spines that flare up when it lazily swims around among smaller fish before shocking them either to death or enough to stun them for it to quickly suck up.
It does this by extending its jaw slowly and pulling in to create a small suction. Also inspired by many real-life fish.

Winter is too cold for water to properly dissolve what is needed for electricity to be conducted, forcing these fish to move on or else really fight for food to survive.

How does it have a metal skeleton?
Metal absorption from runoff into rivers, lakes and so on. This is partially why they can't live in the ocean as any runoff from rain and so on would be too quickly diluted for these fish to grow.

The Static Spine begins the process of absorbing metal ions from its environment from the moment the eggs are laid, and continues to do so through the transparent body of the Larva stage. Here its spine can be seen taking on the metallic coat/transition. The process slows down once its fully grown but they never really stop absorbing metals from their environment.

Does this mean they can have different metals?
Sure does. Depending on all sorts of environmental conditions it's ultimately whatever is most heavily present in the water where the eggs find themselves. Anything from aluminium to gold, with the latter being much rarer of course.

Generate Electricity Ability
As I said I wanted a fish that could fill two positions, a fish and an alternative to practising the Lighting ability Generate Electricity.
And so for Wyngrew looking to give the ability a go they also get to hone their fishing skills. Catch a Static Spinefish and you can cook the fish from the inside out by conducting your electricity right through its metal skeleton. You can tell it's working by the fin spines flaring up in response and you can tell you've done a good job when you have a nice fish dinner afterwards. Careful though, you may have a metallic aftertaste if you overdo it

How strong is its electricity?
To smaller fish and organisms, deadly or enough to seriously stun the little things.
To natural predators such as larger fish or fisher birds they generate enough to lightly stun or scare them off. Hence they sport some brightly coloured fins to warn them like other animals in nature are known to do. (If this doesn't work they tuck in those fins and swim for it)
And to anything bigger, Wyngrew included, its nothing more than a static shock like when you've been wearing socks on the carpet again.

Some younger Wyngrew find it fun to slap each other with this fish for this added bonus effect.
