For probably two months straight I used to wake up every morning at 5AM and fire up FF7 to do nothing more than run in circles in Mideel so I could get strong enough to defeat Emerald Weapon.
Final Fantasy 7’s locations are just as good as real to me. They are locations I can visit from time to time when I need a healthy dose of nostalgia.
What are your favorite memories from Final Fantasy 7?

Speaking of Mideel I think I enjoyed the second disc the best. That's my favourite memory, of those hours with Cloud spaced out and the rest scrambling around the world to deal the last blows to Shinra. I liked the pace and the the plot hadn't yet blown out of proportion as JRPGs usually do, in my opinion (I wish they'd just kept it to ecoterrorists versus Shinra).

Yeah, FF get to where you basically have to fight God
at the finale due to how much the stakes rise over
the course of each game. I dug it back in the day,
but it was the first RPG I ever played,
so I didn't know what to expect.

Or something worse, someone who thinks they will do you a favour by snuffing out THE existence. I can't begin to describe how much I loathe that trope in JRPGs (and it seems it exists in other media as well, the anime Kaiba for example). I played through Xenogears recently for the first time and thought that the characters and plot were pretty solid (and even holding up to this day, for whatever game narratives are worth), until the last minutes. Frakk you, Krelian. But I digress.
I think what FF7 did really good were the environments you visited throughout the game, they had a lot of character. I never got that from earlier instalments as much. If the overall plot had been more close to earth just as many of the moments in the world I think this had been a truly extraordinary game, now it's "just" really great to me. I think the same holds true for FF9, a truly magical game with wonderful places... but the last few hours took away a lot of that magic.
I still hold FF7 dearly, it was the first FF game I completed. But today I think there's a lot of other Square games I enjoy more for its lasting quality, FF9 for example. Speaking of narratives of being more down to earth, I'm gonna return to Front Mission 2 now! Now there's a series which knows how to do epic on the small reletable scale.

Yeah, most of the FF games get crazy at the end.
8 and 9 did feel needlessly hyperbolic, but for some reason
I always jived with FF7s. FF6 is equally as solid as FF7 in my book,
and the world has a lot of that subtle charm your talking about.
If you're looking for a good RPG experience, it's worth your time.
