Description Sweets, a rescue horse, grazes as the sun goes down.

Sweets is a 16 year old mare, 15.2 hands high.  We are unsure of the breed.  Sweets was rescued along with another horse, Star, after having not been fed for months and constantly abused.

She is available for adoption, visit and like Pasture Pals Equine Rescue's Facebook Page for more information on her or any of the other horses, miniature horses and donkeys!

The husband tells me I've been on a silhouette kick lately, but I can't help it.

This is a very nicely composed image. I love the silhouette; you've done an excellent job of getting the horse between you and your light source (the sun) and it does a splendid job of backlighting the horse, but not so much that it's a complete silhouette. I'm also loving the solar flare.
I am not liking however, the fact that almost half of the image is cast in shadow by the light source. For me, I would like to see some more detail in the trees.... However, I can tell that this was a fast exposure (i.e. fast shutter speed); your background is crisp, in focus, and without a lot of motion blur in the upper levels of the trees.
Overall, a nicely composed shot.

Beautiful shot! The way the sun is shining down like rays from heaven! The way it appeared to glow upon the body of the horse! Just wonderful work! Personally, I loved the silhouette effect! Keep up the good work!

Here to deliver some constructive criticism on behalf of ProjectComment .

Firstly let me say that overall, I really like this image. It's warm and feels very peaceful. The golden color and even the sun-spots, which are often over-done, look nice here. Your composition is well done, and the focus is crisp. In my opinion, you've successfully captured the feeling of peace in the image.

I see from your EXIF data that your aperture was set at f22 when you took the shot. One thing I would change is widening this (a smaller number). Large aperture numbers are best for landscapes, not so much for intimate scenes like this one. Note how you can see detail in the entire image, especially in the trees at the background. A wider aperture would've softened the background, making the horse's silhouette really pop out.

I notice in another comment you said, "I don't tend to remove things from my photos." As a photographer myself, I'd advise for removing certain things from your pictures. Editing, as long as it isn't overdone, can only make your image better. Some artists feel like photo-shopping something is 'cheating', but I disagree. Film and prints were able to be edited to a degree before the invention of digital cameras, so post-processing isn't 'breaking tradition' or anything like that.

As I said, I really enjoy this image. My advice for you is to consider post-processing as a tool you can use to it's full extent in the future, and to think carefully about how aperture will affect your photo's outcome.

Here from ProjectComment

Wow this is gorgeous. The way you captured the horse's silhouette is fantastic, especially since the colors around the horse are more intense/saturated. The spots from the sun are a little distracting, however I have no idea how to get rid of (or diminish) those except for editing the photo in something like photoshop.

Thanks!  I don't tend to remove things from my photos, so the sunspots stay!  haha I've had mixed reviews about them, but I like them.

Nice shot, I love the lighting on the horse and it's dark side, it's spot on. the whole flow of orange, pink and black are what make this picture ^^.

I say this is a very professional photo, since I understand that you knew how to make this shot perfect.

Also, I apologize, but I can't get over how neat the orange lighting on the horse (I mean that in a good way ^^)

CRPhotography comment:
A great idea and a great rendering. The flare is correct, the rendering of the light, shaping the contour of the horse is really well achieved.
Good iso, triggering speed and aperture to get all details of this early sunset.
Maybe a little less dark area on the left would have been better, heck it doesn't remove any quality to the result
I would add also that a little less ground at the legs of the horse, and a bit more sky, with the sun closer to the back of the horse, might have been terrific too.
In overall, a great achieved shot, with an idea and a very great rendering and result. Well done

Okay, to start off, I am a huge equine fan, photos like this just make me smile. Honestly, this image is perfect and it couldn't be any better. Using the setting sun as a perfect lighting tool; all the while keeping the detail. Perhaps the glare is a bit much, but I still love it I also have a bigger thing for rescues

This is stunning. I can see why you've gone on a silhouetting spree; the shape of the trees against the sky, the rays of light streaming from the sun, the horse's dark image etched in a golden outline... it's gorgeous. I don't know much about photography, but what I do know tells me this is excellent.

Lovely silhouette and lighting! Awesome work with that. Awesome focus too. I think I would have liked to see a wider frame with a bit more space off to the left but that is just my opinion.

not bad quality - I see some pixels here but it looks fine any way. Great lighting, warm and really nice for eyes. Idea of photo is very good. I sumpose it would be better to have this sun light at his head instead of ... but it's impressive any way and I like it
