Description This... lol... Well, what can I say? It was an unplanned picture I threw together quickly to try out some techniques. They're happy little totoros singing in the forest. Yay, Miyazaki!

According to the newest statement in the policy regarding tracing, fanart of any kind is the same thing as tracing because both of them draw off things that have already been done, and therefore you will never see any originality in fanart. That's right, I might as well have just traced a screenshot from the movie because that's as original as fanart is.

And yes, that is the official stance on it as per this news article: [link]

Are you as miffed about it as I am? If you're a fanartist, you're being called an unoriginal hack by this website. Enjoy your "professional art community"

At least the rejection rate ratio is almost 1:1.

Edit: lol... almost 4:1 now.

Oh, really? Cool! I just made my sister a clay set of three, actually! I'm not that good at modeling with clay, but it's fun. I would like to see yours!

Ooh you have to take a pic of them! I wanna see
My shite one is on here, it'll be in the polyclay or sculptures album - something like that It's not an actual totoro but it's more of an inspired lump-creature...thing. I used a different clay to usual and it was kinda sticky so didn't turn out as decently as I had imagined.

The blue guy is my favorite! It occurs to me I fucked up the feet, though. That's what I get for not using any references and going from memory. According to DA, though, I might as well have just traced a screenshot. They think we fanartists are on the same level as tracing. They tell us we have no originality. It is sad that this is the official stance from the administration team here.

Meanwhile, they spout a bunch of bullshit about allowing traces to "encourage" artists and help with "creativity" (please). Who claims to want to promote creativity and encourage artists when they tell fanartists "don't bother, it's all already been done before"?

The quote: "For one, the very nature of a fan art gallery indicates that you will not find very much originality; all submissions will be directly based upon someone else’s artwork and concepts. One is also more likely to find a younger, less experienced artist submitting to these types of galleries." (from [link] )

Now, after the community bitching about them allowing direct traces for a year, they release the same rules again, worded slightly differently. They're still allowing traces, but they have to be secluded to the fanart gallery alone, because obviously you're not going to find any kind of originality in the fanart gallery ANYWAY, amirite?

So, so lame, buddy. Go reject this article, if you don't think tracing should be allowed (at least anywhere outside of scraps):

LovelyLocks In reply to chesney [2009-02-02 19:08:19 +0000 UTC]

It's plain bullshit, what they have said. Say if there was a comic artist, making a Batman comic in this day and age, the character is not their own, and never will be, but that does not make them inexperienced or unimaginative.

Tracing is inexperienced, I used to do that when I was like 10, as well as drawing me own art.
It's like they've written everything backwards. I could never understand what they are trying to say. It's just seems so silly.

Yes! I'm gonna go reject this article!

And your picture's still totally gorgeous~!!

chesney In reply to LovelyLocks [2009-02-03 01:20:03 +0000 UTC]

I know! And on top of that, they are saying it is okay for people to directly trace, say, pages of Batman comics! Explain that! How is that okay?

You know what really doesn't make any sense is they don't allow edits or recolors of exisiting work. But they allow full-blown traces. So, it's like, "Hey, folks, don't fuck with someone else's work unless you rip it off 100%, okay?"

The good news is, the copyright office was recently contacted and there are paragraphs on their website found to say what they are allowing is ILLEGAL!

I think they will now have to revise their policy on tracing, or end up getting sued. There is hope, yet!

LovelyLocks In reply to chesney [2009-02-03 04:13:45 +0000 UTC]

It makes absolutely no sense at all.

But that is some sweet news!! Sweet as~! Have you or somebody else got the copyright office to contact them??

That is a real sweet scene! What they were saying could not be any more wrong.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

chesney In reply to LovelyLocks [2009-02-03 04:23:01 +0000 UTC]

They are "checking it out with their legal team" right now, supposedly. I guess we'll give them a while to revise the policy, but if they don't there are people here bearing their teeth more than ready to go to the copyright office and out dA. I guess we just have to wait and see, huh?

Awwww, so cute! I think I watched this movie even before I knew what anime was (or who Miyazaki too, but that almost goes without saying).
Thanks for the link to the news article too, it's always good to have that info sitting in the back of your mind. Just in case.
Wondering though, it's been a long time since I've seen this movie.... Where's the music coming from?
Looks great!

I think I watched it about the same time. I was probably 12 or so. I remember watching it with my sister who is 3 years older than I. It was kind of fun, two sisters watching a movie about two sisters.

Lol. I think I watched it with my little sister and my mom... But I don't truly recall...
Though we did have a similar situation with watching "27 Dresses". Have you seen that one? (Loved it! Watching it now!) I told my sister as we were watching it, "if you pull any of that stuff on me, I will hurt you." XD

Satori-Blackthorn In reply to chesney [2009-02-03 03:15:54 +0000 UTC]

Egads! It's such an excellent sister movie. Well, kinda. In the way that the little sister comes back and steals the guy that the older sister has a mad crush on, and then takes the dream wedding that the older sister's always wanted... Lol. Now you can see why I told my sister to not even try pulling that stuff off with me (I'm the older one, can you tell? )
I recommend it wholeheartedly! Especially if you're a chickflick fan. James Marsden is in it as well - Cyclops from the X-Men trilogy.

Todoro omg <3 I watched this movie as a kid like crazy. It was my first Miyazaki film. ;W; It was the best.

ALSO~ I see no problem with the rule change, because it is true. When you are a beginner tracing/copying is something one does to learn. I also see no sentence where it says fanart is the same as tracing. oO; Sounds like an assumption

LOL and u kno wut happins wen u assume! u maek an ass out of u and me BBB -had to say it-

Its just a rule giving more leniency towards tracers. I think it makes sense, and they're not allowing all traced works. They probably get so many traced work complaints over things that are only "meh", that they just decided to outline things a little differently. -nods- 'w'

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

chesney In reply to ladyz0e [2009-02-01 04:50:23 +0000 UTC]

It was my first Miyazaki movie, too!

And yes, I know you see no problem with the rule because we've been down this road before, and our opinions on the matter just differ. However, (and I'm pleased to see this) the majority hate it. And the way they are disrespecting fanartists is also a big problem. Someone here asked the copyright office of the USA if it were okay, and they replied and said it would only be okay with permission. The fact that DA is breaking a law by allowing it isn't so overlookable.

The derogatory quote about fanart actually comes from the previous article a year ago. And as everyone is saying, why does it need to be put in the fanart gallery? Why not scraps? If it's TRULY being used as a learning tool, it belongs in scraps. And there is no written rule that states every single thing you doodle or draw HAS to be uploaded to dA. If they just enforced that they went in scraps, I think it would calm... oh, 98% of the angry population down. That, and to stop insinuating there is absolutely no originality in the fanart gallery. That gets under my skin a lot.

One of three things is going on: either the white one sings like William Hung, it's singing some crazy lyrics like killing prairie dogs is what I love to do... or the it's singing the same song over and over.
