A possible explanation for the name fly agaric is that the red membrane on the hat is the part of the fungus that contains the substance muscarinic, from which a fly-killing agent could be made.
Some have seen a link with hallucinations of flying through the air when ingested, but this is etymologically incorrect.
The Latin word for the fly is musca.
