Description About the idea

Some time ago I had to make a presentation for school about what art inspires me. This one for example really inspires me:
[link] When I read some more about the art of this artist I found out to my big surprise that his drawings are all made with ballpoints. I was pretty stunned, I never knew these kind of results where possible with ballpoints.

So I wanted to try it to, and bought myself some ballpoints. ( For some reason I can’t find a yellow ballpoint though. )

I gave it a try on making a psychedelic drawing, and I think I pulled it off rather well.

( I’m actually really pleased about it, I could see it already as a big poster in my room )

About this drawing
It was quite a lot work to make this drawing, this is mostly because I really like smooth colouring, and to make ballpoint colouring smooth you need A LOT layers.

Somewhere in the future I would like to make a big drawing with ballpoints.
( This one was A4 I would like to give it a try on A3 which is 2 times bigger. )

( BTW the colours in the original version are way better then those on screen )

Interesting drawing my friend! 8DD I saw the page of that artist and he is now on my deviantWATCH. By the way, about the ballpoints yu used there, you made ALL the picture with ballpoints?

Chibi-Sugar In reply to Paulcellx [2010-12-28 09:46:52 +0000 UTC]

Aww thank you for the compliment.

This drawing was completely done in ballpoints ( it was a set of then coloured ballpoints from Steadtler, if I remember it correctly. I was pretty hard to find coloured ballpoints BTW coloured pens are usually some sort of gel-pens these days, but you can shade with those. So I was happy to finally find this set, although it sadly doesn't contain a yellow pen. )

It's the only drawing I have made with ballpoints. I still want to make another drawing using only ballpoints because it is an interesting technique, and the colours are very bright and vibrant, but I just didn't get the right idea for a new ballpoint drawing yet.

You are very welcome.

Whoah, and i swear you did "some" pats of the drawing using ballpoints. I mean, with that background you put there, it looks that you used some kind of color pencils. But if you say they are ballpoints... it's amazing! O_O Are this the ones you use? [link]

I don't know where to get ballpoints in my country, and if we find some they are of bad quality and they doesn't ink as they have to. I used to work with ballpoint pen, a black one. There is an artist who make drawings with ballpoints. [link] this for example. Well, let's get some ideas! ;D Try to inspire!

Chibi-Sugar In reply to Paulcellx [2011-01-01 08:24:44 +0000 UTC]

Well it sure was a lot of work to get the background like that, layers, layers and the some more layers, in the end I was working on it at school, at home, even in the bus.

These are the ones I use: [link]
It’s too bad the ballpoints that good where you live.
I normally work with colouring pencil so I find out work with ballpoints is in my opinion a lot harder, especially to get it smooth.

The art work you showed was really nice indeed. I guess I should really give ballpoints a try again

Yes, there are some drawings that when yu see them you see that they required a lot of work! i like that kind of drawings, very detailed of course. Whoah, that should hae been funny to work on it on everywhere!! ;D

Ohhh now i see wich ones you use. I haven't saw that ind of ballpoints here on my country, sadly we don't hae so much stuff! XDDDD Maybe i will get them by internet! 8DDD And believe it or not, practicing with ballpoints helped me on making color pencils smooth! XDD

Yes! ;D

It was a lot of fun to work on it everywhere indeed, especially at school with friends suddenly asking: β€œare those… teeth… in the background ”
And they sure are, those teeth are totally random BTW, I drawing the bubbles in the water, and some of them had a shape that reminded me of teeth, so I though β€œwhy not” and drew teeth in the back ground.
I actually gave it a try again yesterday to work with ballpoints, I remember it was pretty hard to work with ballpoints, but not that it was that hard! I guess I’ll need some more practise

Now that you are telling me, i realized that rthose things are teeths, by the way... what inspired you to make those teeths? Something in particular, if they are random, they had to came form something! xD Or is 100% random stuff?
Yeah, some people tell us stuff when we are drawing things. Well, i haven't tried to work with colorfull ballpoints, just black one, but for me is kinda easy... well i am just a n00b in the ballpoints bussiness! LOL!

Chibi-Sugar In reply to Paulcellx [2011-01-05 06:52:22 +0000 UTC]

I came up with the teeth, when I was drawing the bubbles in the water under the cloud.

Some of those bubbles reminded me of teeth, so I decided it would be fun to draw teeth on the background.

Aww thank you very much for the compliments.

It makes me happy to hear you like the design and composition, you know this drawing is made differently than most of my other drawings, usually I plan everything, while this drawing just got build up when I was drawing, I just worked with the ideas that popped in my head.

Working with ballpoints was very fun to do, it's time consuming, but I think it's just not possible to get this kind of colours with colouring pencils!

Aww thank you very much for the compliments.
Saturday I almost started a new one, I still want to make on A3 paper, and your enthousiasm about my ballpoint work inspired me to try something again, but the seize of the paper made it difficult for me to start since I can'n just work on my lap when sitting in front of my computer like I normally do, for this seize IΒ΄ll really have to work on a table or desk I guess. IΒ΄m also still pretty sore about the fact that I yet havenΒ΄t found a yellow ballpoint, but maybe IΒ΄ll walk in to one some day.

Here is someone else doing also ballpoints. Very different style but I thought you might like it:
[link]

Btw which brand of ballpoint pens do you use/would you recommend?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Chibi-Sugar In reply to Zulma-san [2010-02-24 15:59:45 +0000 UTC]

That's a very interesting technique uses, thank you for the link.

At the moment I use Steadtler, although I'm not sure if I would recommend them or not, it was just the only pack of coloured ballpoints I could find in the stores.
I have a pack of 10 pens: black, brown, dark green, light green, light blue, dark blue, purple, pink, red and orange.

They where actually pretty hard to find, almost all the coloured pens are gel-pens these days, and they are not very suited to colour with, they are to wed, so you can't go from light to dark by using different amounts of pressure.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Zulma-san In reply to Chibi-Sugar [2010-02-24 16:49:07 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome.

I see what you mean. I have red, blue, black and green ballpoint pens. But the more I am thinking about, the less I remember seeing any other colors. Yeap the gel ones don't allow any shading at all.
Well thank you much for the brand name.

Keep up the good work!

In the image you linked, it's not even really visible that it's with ballpoints!

It has been a crazy amount of work, but it was worth it.

It totally isn't visible that that other drawing is made with ballpoints indeed, I found out because in some of his artist descriptions he does see it's ballpoints, but I think it should be possible with pencils as well, although ballpoints do seem to give more lively colours.

Link in your description doesn't seem to work tough.

Heh, so you put this picture with the Mondrian collection for fun last wednesday?
Missed your round, so must have missed the explanation.

Chibi-Sugar In reply to Rogerregorroger [2010-02-14 13:35:10 +0000 UTC]

Aww thanks for the compliment

( Thanks, I fixed the link )

Last Wednesday, well it pretty much was what I was working on after the Mondrian class, although you're right it doesn't have much to do with Mondrian, it must have been my fever that made me put it on the table.

I actually didn't give an explanation for it, I only told about Louise B. , van Gogh and Picasso.
Although now my head is working properly again, I could make up a whole explanation why this drawing would make sense on the Mondrian table, since it's kinda psychedelic, and psychedelic means exploring the human mind and psyche and the beauty of it, while Mondrian was also trying to capture the essence of things, although he was especially in his later works more specified in the beauty of nature, while psychedelica is more about the mind.
( There we go, one completely made up, no sense making, yet slightly interesting sounding explanation. If I had launched it at school we could have gotten one hell of discussion about it )

The hair colour is quite weird, but I wanted to give it a try to colour the hair with a unique colour.
