Rhythm

For , a prize piece for a contest at ~KY-club . I'm planning on sending her a special printout of this to cheer her up (or whatever other piece she might prefer, if it makes her happy).

Little blurb-y writing to go with it. If it's bad, forgive me; I haven't written fiction in any form in years, and NEVER with YYH.

It was happening again; just like everything else when it came to them.

They'd walked onto the floor in their usual competitive spirit. Moments before, the two of them had began ribbing each other about their dance moves, or lack thereof (everything from headless zombies to one-legged rabbits was used to describe the others skills), and of course they couldn't back down from such a challenge.

The music had hit a hard bass rhythm, reverberating through the packed club. Even the bright lights seemed to be dancing to the beat as they waver and changes colors as they swam along the floor. They reached a quiet portion of the room, determined to not to be interrupted.

And then Yusuke began to dance.

Shit. Kuwabara should've known better; the way Urameshi fought was an obvious clue toward his flexibility and speed, but he'd never seen him move his hips like that before. Wide open vest showed off every muscle as he mpved. Even the smirk on the half-demon's face seemed a little different in this light....

He'd be damned if he was gonna give in this easily though. He was Kazuma Kuwabara! The redhead focused on the rhythm for few seconds, and finally showed a few moves of his own.

Moments later, big brown eyes widened slightly, and the smirk was a little smaller. His best friend/rival might not be built for speed with that thick, toned body, but he wasn't clunky in the least. Not right now, anyway. Arms that could punch out a demon in one shot or hold a tiny kitten like it were glass moved smoothly to the beat, feet typically tripping all over themselves around Yukina gliding on the floor like he'd been born to do it...

Well, this was going to be interesting.

The music blared on, song after song blending into each other. As every note sank in, the two Tantei continued their little challenge, grinding and stepping to the beats trying to outdo the other. Yusuke had a light sheen appearing, the bright colored lights glowing against his skin; and Kuwabara's curly hair began to unravel out of it typical shape, a few strands starting to fall down the side of his face, softening his features.

It was after the third straight beat change that Yusuke noticed. There had been a LOT more room between them earlier...and judging by the look on the redhead's face, he'd figured it out. And there was something else too....

Huh, Urameshi had noticed too, then. It'd taken a few seconds for Kuwabara to register that the feet separating them had seriously dwindled. That wasn't what surprised him. They were moving differently too. When they'd begun, the two had each been pulling off their own style of moves, fighting against each other in this bloodless version of their usual personal dance. Now...

Now they were dancing together. As in, together together. Each step they took seemed to play with the moves of the other young man, not competing against each other, but moving together. Almost teasing each other, daring them forward. As if it was the way it was supposed to happen....

It had been that way for awhile though. They fought like they always did, getting under each other's skin the way only they could. Hard punches that weren't quite as hard as they were before, comments made with a teasing smile and laugh instead of a snarl or a wicked smirk. Then when they fought against whatever asshole demon decided to take in the Ningenkai that week, they'd take on their own group of lackeys. But somehow, someway, the honourable redhead and smartass brunette always seemed to find each other in the fight, their two fighting styles melding and bringing on one hell of a tag team.

Still, this was a new, weird thing, Yusuke thought. There was no blood involved here, no fighting for your life (and millions of other lives, while you're at it). Not even a Hiei and Kurama around, because there was no chance in any realm that the Fire Demon would come to a place like this. Just Kuwabara and Urameshi; Kazuma and Yusuke, with grinding hips and smooth moves and blinding lights and heart-changing rhythm...

Movements slowed ever so slightly. For about a minute. Then Urameshi gave the little smirk-smile that had quickly become a trademark. And Kuwabara had to smile back. Well, if one didn't mind, damned if the other was gonna walk away like a sissy.

The rhythm changed again, and their little dance ran on, to whatever song would come next...
