Description
Sound the bugle now - play it just for me
As the seasons change - remember how I used to be
Now I can't go on - I can't even start
I've got nothing left - just an empty heart
I'm a soldier - wounded so I must give up the fight
There's nothing more for me - lead me away...
Or leave me lying here

The first snow flakes of the year began to drift down softly from the sky. The grey-colored grass began to collect small pockets of snow, and the slight breeze would waft these pools of frozen condensation away from their initial resting place. Leo rested quietly next to Dublin and listened to the love of his life breath in and out. She sounded peaceful. Snowflakes landed in her mane and tail, as she dreamed. Leo watched her. Maybe she was dreaming of him? He smiled to himself, liking the idea of his sweet spotted mate imagining him. However, she was not as vibrant as she used to be. Age had overtaken her, and flecks of grey could be seen throughout the white of her appaloosa coat. Dublin wasn't getting any younger, and Leo wasn't getting any older, but he never ceased to see her as a constant example of perfection.
He listened again to her breathing. It sounded different this time. Instead of a full inhale, he could hear her struggling to expand her lungs. He got nervous, hoping that he had heard it wrong. But again, Dublin tried to inhale, and stopped half-way through. He listened again and again to her shallow breaths, as fear started to creep into his emotions.
She had lived a long life-time with Leo. They had never truly been apart. He never left her side, especially when she had begun to turn old and grey. She feared that he would no longer love her when she began to age, and tried to tell him he would be better off on his own. All he did was smile and say, "I've made a promise to stick with you from now until forever. It's a promise I will keep until the end of my days." She had smiled at him after he had said this, knowing full-well that he had promised to love her forever, as he would never die.
Leo watched Dublin's breaths get shallower. He had watched many other horses come and go. He had felt sadness, but had quickly learned to ignore it as he collected ageless years. But this was different. Dublin didn't have long, and he knew it. This was the end. He thought about letting her go peacefully in her sleep, but he had to say goodbye. He couldn't let her go without saying goodbye. He nuzzled her softly, stirring her from her sleep. She opened her eyes weakly, and focused on the small snow flakes falling gently into the grass.
"Dublin.." Leo said, softly, as if he was afraid to frighten her.
"Leo.." She whispered in response.
He leaned into her, and got as close as he physically could. She shivered, and then smiled weakly at him.
"I love you, my dearest.. Please don't leave me here alone."
Dublin focused back on horizon. She was too weak to respond. Leo's heart was breaking.
She barely lifted her head from the ground, and touched her nose to his. It was a sign that she felt the same. A non-spoken "I love you." Tears filled Leo's eyes. This couldn't be happening. Not to Dublin. She deserved more than anyone to live a hundred lifetimes. Leo wished with all of his soul that he could take the grips of death from her. He wished more than anything that he could trade places. But this was a messed up world. It was a world where true love got ripped apart by immortal life.
Leo began to sob, as Dublin closed her beautiful purple eyes. He felt the life slipping from her bony body. He nuzzled into Dublin's neck, trying to hold her here. She breathed a few more times, and then let go.
Her body was motionless, and Leo was broken.
