I'm posting this to a couple of sites because honestly I want to share how I think Infinite could have been better written, because he honestly had a LOT of potential.
So instead of Infinite being a pre-existing mobian, when I first saw him I thought he was gonna be some kind of scientific horror fused amalgamate of other Sonic characters. So then I thought, “What if Infinite started off as just some mindless organic ‘doll’ that Eggman created?”
Like a thing that has no features: no eyes, no mouth, no tail, nothing except for the implanted Phantom Ruby and the trademark mask. Eggman creates this organic “doll” that does nothing outside of living and following Eggman’s orders, but it’s like a robot almost.
It’s a terribly weak ragdoll, and the only other function it has besides living is basic memory. So Eggman takes this featureless organic doll to fight Sonic, and Sonic starts obviously whaling on this thing, it can’t really fight, it’s terribly slow, it’s getting tossed around pretty easily. BUT AT ONE POINT it does something weird: it grabs Sonic and momentarily drains a lot of his energy but he bounces back after a few seconds and wraps up the battle. Eggman leaves, Sonic wins, day saved.
Eggman hasn’t been seen in a few months since the weird encounter, and everything’s been quiet. But the silence is broken by Eggman again when he starts terrorizing that Mobian town and this time, he’s got the Infinite we know in tow with him.
The reason why Eggman has been quiet all these months is because he’s been dragging Infinite around to fighting multiple characters (Which gives Silver non-comic related pre-existing reason to be in Forces, and maybe also we could cut Classic Sonic altogether and throw Blaze in there instead; Silver comes back from the future because he knows Eggman wasn’t supposed to be there and something’s up, and Blaze comes from the Sol Dimension because this isn’t the Eggman of her world and something is suspicious and better tell Sonic about it). So Infinite has absorbed the essence of these characters like he did with Sonic and develops a refined conscious from all the experience he’s had, combined with the power of the sentient beings whose essence he’s drained which also gives him corrupted physical attributes of the characters whose essence he’s absorbed. He’s also able to create those copies because he’s drained their power. The reason why he does that “glitchy” effect is because his physical appearance is kept up by the Phantom Ruby.
So now Infinite’s back wreaking havoc and Sonic goes out there to stop it. Now? Infinite still has a memory of being beat down by Sonic. Now he’s pissed.
Now at one point in the story, Infinite’s personality grows beyond the control of Eggman because he realizes he’s this artificial being made of the essence of other beings and he's been manipulated by Eggman and still holds animosity against Sonic for attacking him so mercilessly, so he will wipe out all life on Earth and use the Phantom Ruby’s power to construct it to his image. The final boss includes a monstrous kaiju looking form of Infinite who uses the Chaos Emeralds to power the Phantom Ruby (which gives us Super Sonic again), and it’s up to Rookie McOriginalCharacter to collect the Chaos Emeralds from seven stages as kaiju Infinite bends the reality of each stage (not like the clouds of red cubes he uses but like… actively altering the environment) in the background.
And honestly that’s about as far as I got. I don’t know if there’d be some kind of redemption for Infinite but if I think about it I’ll throw that in there too. I'm thinking about designing the final form Infinite in the manner that Dark Gaia, Solaris, and Chaos are designed.
And if I had it my way, Phase 1 Infinite would have an orchestral of his theme, and Phase 2 Infinite would have the Fist Bump Orchestral we all heard in the game.
