Love and Tolerate. Does it matter that people like her? Does it hurt anyone? That's all I'm saying.
Just as a point of reference though, I'm not a super Derpy fan, I think she's cute n all. I also love that fans have influenced the show. But you don't have to be anti. Just let people like Derpy and we'll let you name a pony Bloodknife.

First of all, you don't have to like the character.
Second of all, people are weird, they look for things that are off and not the norm. Rather than trying to understand derpy, you'd HAVE to understand the people who even noticed the dumb thing. The people who noticed her screwed up eyes are those kind of people who ONLY watch a movie to see where the creator screwed up. Whenever you see some one pointing out the flaws in a movie that you didn't even notice until they pointed them out and then you had to go LOOK for them, those are the kind of people who found and like derpy.
Now, I don't know these people personally, and they really give me a headache, but the thing is, these nit picky people have a lot of pull. The REASON they have alot of pull is that they're SO good at finding this useless crap and making themselves sound SO superior to other people, that NORMAL people who didn't notice this stuff feel all embarassed and stupid, so they rally behind the nit-picker to make themselves feel better.
It's not so much that this character has any purpose or depth, it's just it gave the nitpicky people something to do. Now, people who don't want to feel "left out of the joke" pretend they know the joke and get on the bandwagon, and suddenly all kinds of people like this character because "hey, that guy said it was awesome". Ididn't notice the dumb pony until I kept hearing about it and got annoyed and went and watched the episode AGAIN. I STILL missed it, so I had to rewatch it slower. Who even noticed this???
So now, it's become an "in joke" and every body wants to be "in on it". So now eveyone looks for her in every episode and it's become this huge thing. She's like the Where's Waldo? of MLP:FIM

And even if it's people trying to look for mistakes then...most are not blown out of propotion.
