Description My very first CGI sculpture!  Wooohooo!  *dance of joy*  I have wanted to do cgi work for so long but all the programs I've seen have such a massive learning curve that I couldnt even begin to figure them out.  UNTIL!!!!  I discovered Sculptris a free 3d software from the same company that  made Zbrush.  It is amazing and so easy.  You use different 'brushes' to pull and stretch a ball that works very much like clay.  I am having so much fun with this thing!
You can download it here:  pixologic.com/sculptris/

I'm hoping sometime soon to do some 3d printed things with this program.  Not sure how to do that yet but I'm'a gonna learn.

Yeah! It was super fun
But this is really the only one I've done. My computer doesn't have a graphics card anymore. So I can't play.

Looks really good for your first 3d sculpt!!,.. took me around 2 years before i got comfortable sculpting digitally in zbrush as opposed to working in clay

You have ZBrush?  Ooooooohhh.  Awesome!

Thank you so much!  It's just because this program is pretty simple and only has a few brushes.  I don't even think it has character rigging.  (so I don't get too overwhelmed )  In the past I have downloaded different cgi programs and they were so far over my head I couldn't do anything with them.  I still have a ton to learn about this medium.

You are welcome   and yea i use Zbrush for all my faces, hands, feet, 3d-sketching and soon ill be using it to sculpt my dolls bodies.. I wish Zbrush had a better rigging and coordinate system but regardless its an amazing piece of software.  Sculptris and Zbrush have a very similar sculpting feel, Zbrush just has a LOT more features, Ive been using zbrush since version 3.5 (back in 2009) and there are a bunch of features Ive never even touched (never really needed them)

You sculpt your faces on the computer?  So does that mean your prototypes are 3d printed?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DonnKinney In reply to chill13 [2015-02-07 01:55:26 +0000 UTC]

Yep,.. all the faces and hands/feet i use for my prototypes are 3d printed.

chill13 In reply to DonnKinney [2015-02-07 16:07:52 +0000 UTC]

That's sooo cool!  But looking at 3d printing prices, I bet that's a little on the spendy side.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DonnKinney In reply to chill13 [2015-02-07 21:23:17 +0000 UTC]

Its not too bad,.. around $10 for things like faces (i print faces these in nylon then prime and refine them to get them perfectly smooth) and about $50 for a pair of hands printed in smooth ultra high detail acrylic.  I then make molds off these parts and cast them in resin for MUCH less.

chill13 In reply to DonnKinney [2015-02-11 19:02:23 +0000 UTC]

That's not bad, I suppose.  I'm really going to have to try this... and learn mold making.  I have some resin but I've never actually used it.  Because of my lack of mold making skillz.  But that's just something I'm going to have to crack down and do.

I AM going to make a new Rover and try your magnetec face method.  I would love to be able to swap expressions.  Going to have a bit of a hard time, though figuring out the separation line with his hat and all those curls.  How do you get the eyes to stay in place?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DonnKinney In reply to chill13 [2015-02-25 23:10:15 +0000 UTC]

The eyes are held in place to the face with removable eye putty, often i just use non hardening clay to keep them in. Hats had hair are actually really useful for keeping separation lines hidden

Wow so I downloaded Sculptris and started trying it....haha I have a ways to go!  I'm not very good at working in 3D space but this is definitely a cool program

chill13 In reply to Tigerach [2015-02-02 22:15:03 +0000 UTC]

Yay!!  Glad you're having fun!
I reccomend taking a look at some youtube tutorials on it that kind of show you what the different brushes do.  That helped me.

Wow! That's incredible! How long did it take you to do Flyspur's face?  I like the texture of his fur in this medium. Thanks for sharing the program as well. Another year I'd love to try it. Sigh. Life is too busy!

chill13 In reply to zealousshadow [2015-01-31 23:10:11 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much!  I din't really keep track but maybe four hours give or take.  It's so much fun to play with.

This is wonderful!  I have tried to mess around in Zbrush, but got frustrated with its complexity. I'll have to give Sculptris a try!
About how long did this take, if I may ask?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to Daroneasa [2015-01-31 04:22:18 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!!  I was actually REALLY surprised he came out.

This took me a few hours, as I was learning the program.  I looked up a couple of youtube tutorials just to see how things worked.

But once I had all the brushes figured out it went by really fast.  I made Trigger in about an hour or so *haven't put him up here yet*.
I'm serious.  It is SUPER easy.  Mess with it for a bit and use all the brushes but once you've got that down you can do most anything pretty quickly.

Daroneasa In reply to chill13 [2015-01-31 04:33:01 +0000 UTC]

I'll give it a shot, I would love little figures of my characters and besides that, I need a reference sometimes for odd angles and such, what with their big dumb snouts always in the way. XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to Daroneasa [2015-01-31 04:41:31 +0000 UTC]

Oh, those snouts would kill me!!  The Vasthii have long noses and I have only drawn them in profile so far for good reason!

I'm sure it would be VERY useful for that!  I"m just now looking into 3d printing.  But it looks like it costs A LOT.

That'd be awesome!  I should do that.

Goshdangit. You're good at, like, ALL THE ARTS. Hahaha. - No seriously though, it's not even fair.

Anyways. This is really fantastic for a first sculpt. My ultimate goal is to computer 3D model and animate my characters, and even though I am years away from that (I still need to draw some basic sketches and character designs for you guys here on DA lol), I might have to look into this "Sculptris".

Aww!  You're too nice.  I just had some experience with clay and this particular program works very similarly.

Thank you!  I know.  That's what I would LOVE to do.  I'm going to have to learn about rigging and stuff, though..

Yes you do!  I want to see what these guys look like at least.

I am now officially convinced that there is literally nothing you cannot do. 3D Flyspur!! If you could get a hold of a 3D printer you could make even more little figurines!!

chill13 In reply to StellaStarfish [2015-01-30 16:20:41 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I would LOVE to have a 3d printer.  Out of my price range, I'm afraid.  Although, I might have some printed by a third party.  Made Trigger yesterday.

This is incredible!  I had heard about Z-Brush being a good program but I didn't know that they had a free version out there.  I'll have to check this out.

And you have done a great job on your first sculpt in the computer!

chill13 In reply to AlexVanArsdale [2015-01-30 00:36:10 +0000 UTC]

That's exactly what I thought when I heard about it! I had heard of Zbrush but never thought I'd get to play with it. Apparently there are some things Brush can do that Sculptris can't but it seems pretty extensive and amazing to me! I definately rccomend trying it out. It's free after all. There's tons of tutorials in YouTube.

Oh wow! Wow. I know that you're a fantastic sculptor and "figure maker", but this is your first time CGI sculpting, and this looks incredible! It's amazing!! It looks exactly like Flyspur and you've kept every little detail from his ears to his eyes to his facial hair and his nose slits! This looks wonderful! I'd love to see you do more with this program! Great JOB!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to LabelPerginu [2015-01-29 22:15:32 +0000 UTC]

AW!  Thank you so much.  I was really REALLY scared of doing 3d stuff and I was quite dubious about this program.  But I'm serious, it's so easy it's ridiculous!

I'm currently working on Trigger and hopefully will be able to print him.  If it works I may sell a few of him.
