In Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior you are alone in that game except for a very brief moment where you the Hero carry Princess Gwaelin back to her castle. So in a way yu can say there was a very brief 2nd party member. So Luigi gets Princess Gwaelin's original NES colors of White and Red with the third color being red changing towards Gray instead of Black like normal.
