PERSONALITY
Traits ▸ Energetic . Affable . Friendly . Childish . Mouthy . Reckless . Stubborn . Doormat
High energy and easily approachable
Half the time, it’s almost like someone hot wired Riley with a massive battery pack or he just got off an IV of pure caffeine; the guy does not shut up or sit still for more than a second when he’s running on full cylinders. He practically flaunts how friendly he can be, and if he finds someone too shy - or irritated - to talk to him, he’ll put on his best face and go chat them up instead. Riley has a knack for thinking he can read people, and often tries to cater to what he finds they respond well to.
Witty with a touch of asshole
He does not, however, avoid what some people might react poorly to. While as friendly as can be, Riley’s mouth often runs ahead of his brain. He’s well read despite his flighty, rather disorganized disposition, and always enjoys throwing in snarky comment should a conversation turn sour. He uses this mostly in defense of himself as well as others, though also just to rub someone the wrong way. Getting a rise out of people is just too satisfying to pass up if it’s presented to him on a silver platter.
Consequences? What are those?
Riley isn’t one to stop and think about what he’s doing, he just does it. Though it’s made him into the outgoing, talkative people person he is, it’s also gotten him into a lot of trouble. He often jumps head first into anything without considering how the outcome may affect him, or the people close to him. This trait has also encouraged his rather poor choice in recreational habits. He underestimates his own limits until he’s passed out from sleep deprivation, blacked out drunk, or tripping into next week. He’s truly terrible at taking care of himself but despises others taking care of him or telling him what’s best, offering help to Riley is almost always met with rejection.
Easily influenced, impressionable and immature
Because of his underlying need to please and impress people, Riley is never one to go the speed limit when everyone around him is at 100 mph. He’ll take the ticket just to stay with the flow of traffic - metaphorically and literally speaking. He’ll comply to someone without a hint of hesitation, making him both dedicated and supportive to others, but also a walking, talking doormat who’ll readily try whatever he’s offered like a toddler to candy. Riley doesn't like acknowledging he's like this, and pointedly denies it should someone call him out on being easily enabled.
✔ Likes ▸ People, smoking, loud music, long conversations, coke and rum, seriously set-your-mouth-on-fire-spicy food
✘ Dislikes ▸ Handling or being around sharp objects, being ignored, help, anything mint flavored, sunglasses
☢ Fears ▸ Getting figured out, blame, seizures
HISTORY
Hometown ▸ Castelia City, Unova
TL;DR ▸ Riley was a hyperactive child placed in foster care and didn't adjust with new families before moving in with an older couple. They helped him mellow out and put him through school, but this only made him fall in with the most accepting crowd and wound up with some bad habits once he reached college. A reunion with his sister went horribly wrong and she needed to be hospitalized, leading to her previously foster now adoptive parents threatening Riley and preventing him from seeing her at all. He found his first mask shortly after getting caught trying to visit her.
Riley was removed from his parents fifth floor apartment in Castelia City when he was 9, after a fight between his parents attracted the attention of authorities. He was placed into child services with his younger sister, Carmen, as their father failed to find the money to retain custody over them, and his mother faced 3 years in prison for domestic violence. He had no idea about the tension between his parents until it had snapped. Riley didn’t understand how one day he had a family all sitting on the couch together watching early morning cartoons, then the next he was pulled by the arm to a foster home, alone.
Adjusting wasn't a word that applied to Riley, he didn’t adjust. Riley was a high energy kid, but without any positive outlet for it, most of it was used when he was frustrated or upset. He wasn’t placed into suitable home him until he was around 14, and by then, he’d already run away from three different homes, took half a dozen more rides in the back of a cop car, and been kicked out of one house for his wild, destructive behavior. The teen didn’t expect anything different from the latest older couple that greeted him in Humilau, they would get fed up with him after a week and send him back. His new guardians, Teresa and Caleb however, were intent on helping him put his life back together. They managed to turn his attitude around by keeping him occupied with simple chores, and always making sure his pent up energy was well spent.
Riley soon became quite attached to the older couple. They eventually came to be his adoptive parents - though they preferred to be called grandparents - and took him out of the foster care system entirely. He calmed down altogether, becoming a much more pleasant person to be around. After spending most of his adolescence between houses and very behind in each new school, Teresa helped him get caught up with his education, and for the first time Riley was excited about learning. Talking lessons online through high school and a few early college courses when he wasn’t working until he was 18, he advanced enough to get accepted into a university out of state. While he was no longer a minor, Teresa and Caleb still treated him as their own, and made up the funds for his education he couldn't pay from his previous jobs - on their terms of course.
Though, his freshman year did not go so cleanly. Away from the peaceful atmosphere of Humilau, Riley got lost in the wild, new setting, and quickly fell in with the crowd that most easily accepted him. His nights quickly became filled with taking shots, turning into a beer pong champ, and smoking himself into next week. His grades were suffering from it too, and he had to choose between friends, school, and sleep. He neglected the last one until weekends and term breaks up until his senior year when he graduated with a degree in anthropology.
Communication with his sister had stopped all together until he managed to work up the nerve and call her. He was 21 at the time, and she was just turning 18, what better reason than to wish her a happy birthday? After talking for hours, they agreed to start catching up more. When they used to call each other as kids, she would almost immediately ask if he'd heard from mom or dad at all. Hearing how Carmen sounded so happy, he didn't even bother to think about them. Their calls soon got longer and more personal, and he wound up telling her about college, and all the stupid stuff he'd gotten himself into - including a particular habit with weed he just couldn't shake. She'd joked about wanting to try it just once before her "oh-so-protective" and hypocritical older brother shot it down. Riley’s guardians also had yet to find out his little secret, and they had strict opinions about substance abuse even though he wasn’t a minor anymore. staying with them during summers away from school meant following their rules, he followed them - mostly.
When Carmen finally came to visit, they spent a quiet day together until one of his friends hit him up later that evening. He knew his sister was uncomfortable meeting a total stranger, but was surprised when she insisted she go with him. While Riley rolled up a joint in a park with his friend, his sister sat by and watched as he lit it and blew rings out with a grin. Eyeing Riley's friend rolling up a joint for himself, she abruptly snatched after he'd lit it, not that he tried to take it back, or that her older brother was paying attention until it was too late. Inexperienced and just wanting to impress Riley, she took an enormous pull. Swallowing half of the smoke, she sat coughing out the rest. Riley was dumbfounded, his friend was laughing, and she just kept coughing, before a few minutes later, she was on the ground seizing.
Unknown to Riley, his friend had given her a joint rolled with a highly potent, synthetic brand of marijuana, which had been known to trigger very bad reactions sometimes. Before he could stop his friend, the guy ran ditched, and Riley was left with the choice of calling 911 and doing the same, or staying with Carmen and exposing everything to Teresa and Caleb. He picked the latter, rushing to get his convulsing sister to the nearest hospital. Once in the ER, Carmen had stabilized, but fell unresponsive to both Riley’s and the nurses’ pleas for her to stay conscious. She was declared comatose later that night, and Riley couldn’t handle the guilt of what he’d let happen. He left the hospital before her adoptive parents showed up, and quickly went home. He arrived to the disappointment of his guardians, packed his things, and got on the bus back to his university early that morning.
The next year was a turmoil of angry phone calls and threats from Carmen’s family, a few different lawyers, and his own guardians checking in once a week. He was struggling to hold down jobs and balance school at the same time. Any down time he had he spent behind buildings, smoking his stress away for later, even though he knew putting it off would bite him in the ass eventually. Then it did just that. Riley was already walking a thin line, and sneaking a visit to Carmen - who finally woke up after about a week - in recovery was just enough to make it snap. He only wanted to talk, see how she was doing, if he could get her anything - it was cut short when her dad walked in and literally threw him out.
FIRST MASK ▸
After running from the hospital in the insane torrential downpour, he lost his footing crossing water slicked asphalt and went sliding down a small hill, his fall only stopped when he tumbled into the curb. Drenched, dazed and finally diffusing from earlier, Riley sat up in a puddle. His eyes were locked on something sticking out from under a wind ripped bush. Getting up to retrieve it, he guessed the flooding must have washed it down the sidewalk, it was odd looking, and colorful once he smeared away the mud.
He had no idea what compelled him to do it, but he turned the mask over and pressed it to his face, and what he experienced next he couldn’t compare to the highest high he’d ever been on. It was a liberating, complete full body rush that left his skin tingling. He never felt more alive than he did there in the pouring rain, and he would do anything to feel it again, and again. And again.
SECOND MASK ▸
Riley wasn't expecting to discover his second Mask while visiting home in Humilau after a...desperately needed break. Following a tense dinner with Teresa and Caleb discussing his so called career, sister, other particular family member and certain habits they were worried about, he took Belle and his surfboard out in a frustrated rush to avoid further interrogation. Distracted by his thoughts and too busy stewing, he got caught in a sneaker wave and tumbled, much to Belle's distress as she dove after him. When Riley surfaced, sputtering with a combination of panic and rage, only to be slammed again by another crashing wake. Forcing himself to stay under as the roar above his head passed, he took notice to a faint red glow down in the spare reef below.
Belle was distraught, running up and down the beach barking and jumping through the surf searching for Riley before he finally came back up closer to shore. Shaken and catching his breath, he waded back to the dry sand tossing the Mask he had found lodged in some coral towards Bell as he went back to find his board. The Vaporeon took one investigatory sniff towards it and skittered away, whining at Riley when he collapsed in an exhausted heap beside it. Stupid, stupid, stupid. When he snatched the Mask off the sand, he was surprised to find it almost warm in his hands. Fucking joke, get serious, waste. Belle whimpered again, and he sat up with a huff, hoisting his board up and heading back to the house. Let down.
He would put the Heatran Mask somewhere safe for the time being, he wasn't sure if he was ready for what a different Mask would bring out of him just yet.

MASKS
[ MASK I ] CROSSFADED
Alias▸ Crossfaded
Nickname ▸ Cross
Species▸ Noivern
Ability▸ Frisk - When it enters a battle, the Pokémon can check an opposing Pokémon's held item.
Crossfaded can identify any Held Items when entering battle, excluding literal items a person might be holding, such as their phone or wallet etc.
Typing ▸ Flying | Dragon
Nature▸ Sassy [+Sp. Def | - Spd]
Characteristic▸ Thoroughly cunning [Sp. Atk]
Alignment ▸ Neutral Evil
Mask ▸ Nose ring
Held Item ▸ None
Moveset ▸
NORMAL :: Supersonic ▸ Crossfaded is not the hardest hitter or defender, so he makes use of painfully high pitched frequencies he can emit to impair and confuse adversaries
[ STATUS ] The user generates odd sound waves from its body that confuses the target.
FLYING :: Tailwind ▸ Making sure he has the upper hand in at least speed, he whips up a gust that not only makes himself even faster, but also any tag-a-longs he may have
[ STATUS ] The user whips up a turbulent whirlwind that ups the Speed stat of the user and its allies for four turns.
FIRE :: Flamethrower [TM] ▸ Because of his typing, Crossfaded has an extreme disadvantage to ice types and the cold, so he picked up this as a backup plan in case he might encounter any. While the fire type move isn't as powerful it isn't something he normally abuses in battle, going overboard leaves him wheezing, disoriented and about as drained as using Boomburst just once.
[ SPECIAL ] The target is scorched with an intense blast of fire. This may also leave the target with a burn.
NORMAL :: Boomburst ▸ If there was such thing as a hell raising shriek, this is it; he lets out a deafening and destructive sound that blasts everything around him
[ SPECIAL ] The user attacks everything around it with the destructive power of a terrible, explosive sound.
Personality ▸
Crossfaded is a much more independent, self serving creature of the night compared to maskless Riley. While still an ever grinning, flirtatious stoner, Crossfaded isn’t one to let people walk all over him. He’s impeccably more aware that his intentions in pleasing people with pleasantries are hardly of the sincere nature, and he’s far more comfortable making others uncomfortable. Where Riley’s snappy wit might get him into an argument of insults, Crossfaded quite willingly goes looking for opportunities to be a cynical and conniving towards anyone and everyone. The Noivern also has an intense love for doing exactly what he’s told not to do, and actively opposes any kind of partnership where he could end up either having to work under instruction, or need assistance of any kind. He flies solo, period.
Other ▸
▸ Crossfaded’s hearing is intensely amplified to focus on echos or other forms of reverb, making his ears highly sensitive to most any and all sounds. With the ability to hypothetically pick up on a pin dropping across the room in a house two doors down, he pays the price of not being capable of standing extreme noise up close. Car horns, sirens, even shouting can become horrendously painful if he can't avoid them.
▸ His eyesight is worse for wear, leaving him to rely heavily on his ears in both day and night - blind as a bat isn’t just a phase to him.
▸ While he adores making vampire jokes, Crossfaded isn’t out to suck anyone’s blood - his fangs are made more for fruit than flesh (but can be used on the latter if need be).
▸ Built for some serious speed, Crossfaded is fast and accurate, but lacks the skill to really hit hard. His strongest move takes up all his energy and focus, and is always saved as a last resort if quick dodges and strikes start to fail him against an opponent.
▸ He'd rather just irritate the living hell out of an opponent instead of full out attacking them - he likes to play with his food, and play hard to get.
▸ His wings can in fact function as another set of hands, not the entire wing itself, but the part that's considered the thumb on normal bats. They're mostly useful for climbing when flying isn't necessary or possible.
▸ He adores freaking people out; his spine and neck are incredibly flexible and he can turn his head almost 180 degrees both ways, as well as flip it back completely without strain - though it’s taken him a bit of practice, when he first tried it he nearly wound up needing a neck brace.
▸ He's a major flight risk. Too fast, no breaks, and isn't exactly an expert on narrowly avoiding collisions.
[ MASK II ] NOVA
Alias▸ Nova
Nickname ▸ None
Species▸ Heatran★
Ability▸ Flash Fire - Powers up the Pokémon's Fire-type moves if it's hit by one.
Not only is Nova immune to fire type moves but he can also absorb energy to increase his own power when fire is used against him, this does not stack but the immunity stays.
Typing ▸ Fire | Steel
Nature▸ Lonely [+Atk | - Def]
Characteristic▸ Likes to thrash about [Atk]
Alignment ▸ Chaotic Neutral
Mask ▸ Circlet
Held Item ▸ None
Moveset ▸
NORMAL :: Scary Face ▸ Rarely absent of a menacing grimace, Nova stares down opponents, distracting them with aggressive prolonged eye contact and lowering their speed in the process.
[ STATUS ] The user frightens the target with a scary face to harshly lower its Speed stat.
NORMAL :: Frustration [TM] ▸ This move can vary in power depending on who Nova uses it against, those he strongly dislikes are struck harder while those in his favor and neutral strangers receive regular to lesser blows. Because of the nature and subjectivity of this move, Nova tends to use it more in small bursts than all out attacks. A full power Frustration results in both physical and emotional exhaustion, and can only be used a maximum of two times in battle, any more and he'll burn out.
[ STATUS ] This full-power attack grows more powerful the less the user likes its Trainer.
NORMAL :: Protect [TM] ▸ Cooling his body temperature, Nova becomes briefly encased in impenetrable metal. It can withstand some attacks consecutively but normally breaks after one hit; he can select specific areas to protect but that leaves the rest of him vulnerable.
[ STATUS ] Protect protects the user from all effects of moves that target it during the turn it is used, including damage.
FIRE :: Magma Storm ▸ Summoning up a swirling inferno, Nova launches a cascade of molten rock upon an enemy, surrounding them in roaring flames until he exhausted himself or they escape. He doesn't trust himself to control the massive exertion of power and it also leaves him debilitated almost to the point of collapse, using it twice in one day will knock him out of his Mask, so he rarely does.
[ SPECIAL ] The target becomes trapped within a maelstrom of fire that rages for four to five turns.
Personality ▸
Much of Nova's personality stems from Riley's younger life. He's often very put out of most situations, uncomfortable around even close friends and weary of giving his alliance to anyone in fear of it being betrayed. Easy to fire up, the Heatran is just as reactive as his typing. Even more impulsive than Riley or his other masks, Nova doesn't think, he just does. His drive resides in self-preservation, becoming defensive very quickly and snapping without taking anything else into consideration - only to later realize what he's said or done. Self control is Nova's greatest weakness, and is usually the main cause of damage to others and himself. Of all things, Nova brings out Riley's pent up frustrations, especially those pertaining to his own actions and himself. Dissatisfaction would be a light way to put it. In addition to that, after years of pushing down his own resentments towards his birth parents, foster homes, superficial friends and a whole host of other events he's had to grin and bear through, Nova has erupted to the surface in their place.
Other ▸
▸ Nova's body temperature is high enough to heat the air around him, flare ups can make him uncomfortably hot to the touch
▸ Additionally, Nova's body mass is extremely dense due to his typing, making him difficult to lift or knock over, but also slow moving in general
▸ The fabric around his neck can be pulled up like a cowl
▸ His hair is essentially exhaust flames from his body, exercise caution when touching
▸ Nova's base speed is exceedingly low despite his knee-jerk reactions, so he relies more on hitting hard than hitting first
▸ As a Heatran he has decent climbing abilities, in order to scale straight vertical or slopes of even greater degrees he can melt his feet and hands into a surface to stick to it - though this often leaves a trail of brittle metal behind
▸ Hot lava monster is really just and angry small who doesn't understand that a world below 6'3" exists, and being basically 5'0" is hell
